Book Reviews of The Art of Raising a Puppy

Book Review: Best book I've found on puppy rearing
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this book when my husband and I were considering what kind of puppy we wanted to get. It did one thing no other puppy book that I had found did, it ran down the basic personalities of a litter of pups - and what kind of people/families the monks thought they would be compatible with. Most of the books I've seen that discuss puppy personalities are far more general if they discuss personality testing at all. The monks saved us a lot of heartache as my husband and I realized that we had been looking for subtly different things in a dog, and needed to get our own thinking together first before we inflicted some poor puppy with the need to be 2 different things to us. The book provides wonderful information on puppy rearing, what to look for in a breeder, what to look for in socialization, almost anything you could think of. Highly recommended.

Book Review: A Must Own: Clearly written and comprehensive
Summary: 5 Stars

The Monks compile a great deal of knowledge into one very informative, very well-written, hard-to-put-down book. This book focuses on the development, both physiological and psychological, of puppies: from the dams pregnancy and whelping on. They address what to do, what to avoid, nutrition, etc., for each phase. I strongly suggest that you also read "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend". In the latter book (their first) they make it very clear that you should read not only their book, but many others on the training and evolution of dogs and a variety of other related subjects and provide a recommended reading list. Having read both books (and many others), I felt that they had no pretensions (as some do) to be the utmost authority on the subject. Nonetheless, as for puppy books, this is my number one pick, my guidebook.

Book Review: Great book
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered this book upon the advice of our breeder when the puppies were about 2 weeks old. No one is really thinking about serious training when there is still another 6-8 weeks before you receive your newest family member. This book was wonderful. The authors used real dogs and puppies as examples to explain their training techniques. It was well written and easy to understand. Even though we had raised puppies in the past, it had been some time since we'd had a new pup. The content was extremely informative and insightful as to what a dog may be thinking or experiencing. Every time you think, oh-I know all about that, this book could prove you wrong! Even if you only learned a few new things from this book ,it would be worth it to review what goes on inside the mind of a puppy and what can I do to make him the best he can be.

Book Review: The only puppy book you will ever need
Summary: 5 Stars

I have my second copy of this great book, having loaned the first to someone and never getting it back... Being on the verge of aquiring our third German Shepherd, my wife and I haven't raised a puppy in many years, so it was time to re-read the owner's manual. This book is a timeless and definitive tutorial for anyone raising a puppy and beyond. While the instructions and "how-to's" are certainly essential, I find that the philosophy and theory presented throughout is the most valuable part of the book.

If you want to add a four legged friend to your family and wish to have a happy and well adjusted pet (and self) this book is a must. I wish I could afford to buy a dog from the monks of New Skete... but at least I can use their wisdom and guidance. God Bless their work!!

Book Review: If you want to understand your dog, this book is a must!
Summary: 5 Stars

There are many publications which will talk to you of how to train your dog with proven methods for making them a working part of your life. However, I have read no other publications which will help you to UNDERSTAND your animal more than this book. The Monks of New Skete teach you to see the world as your pup will and to help you to develop a relationship which is comparable to no others you have had in your life. By understanding the animal in your life, this book also teaches you to understand how your actions can be viewed by a species which sees the world through ACTIONS, not words. Thus you learn to understand not only your puppy, but yourself. Needless to say, I believe this is the best book I've ever read on the relationship between human and beast!
