Book Reviews of The Art of Raising a PuppyBook Review: Helped prepare me for the road ahead with my new puppy Summary: 5 Stars
For someone who knew nothing about puppies, let alone training them, I found the content to be very helpful, starting with the "how to prepare" section, what types of supplies I needed to buy, and what to expect the first day/night.
The monks emphasize humane, positively-reinforced training methods that are easy to understand and seem easy to implement. Pictures (not that many) are also available to help aid you in case you need further guidance on hand positioning, etc.
A clear, concise framework is provided for various training activities, including the standard sit/heel/stay/down, but also mouthing, chewing, jumping up, possessiveness, submissive urination, and coprophagy. Tips are also provided on feedings and grooming.
I highly recommend reading this book if you are new to puppy training; I felt a lot more confident about how to prepare for and what to do with our puppy after reading this book.
Book Review: A great reference for any new puppy owner. Summary: 5 Stars
While waiting for the day my newly adopted puppy would come home, I read every puppy training book I could get my hands on. This one was by far my favorite. By using an actual litter as an example, the monks take you through the beginning stages in a puppy's life and how its experiences will affect its personality. There are clear, descriptive training exercises as well as a section on disciplining a dog (a topic I found no other books would touch). The thing that most impressed me about this book was how the monks describe a regimen that produces a loving bond between you and your dog. They say that the purpose of dog training is so that the dog can take an active role in the owner's life, without interfering and causing problems. After reading this book, I feel much more confident in training and raising a dog, and I feel as though I would not be able to understand my little American Eskimo pup nearly as much if I hadn't read it.
Book Review: The New Skete Monks and The Art of Raising a Puppy Summary: 5 Stars
This fine "puppy book" gets 5 stars from me because it covers just about everything
a potential puppy owner would be looking for in a puppy book. Even though the New Skete Monks raise German Shepherd puppies, the text is written to pertain to any breed of puppy.
The Monks have wonderful ideas for all stages of puppy life and the books takes us
through the months as our puppies age. The Monks even help us eat our dinner in
peace and quiet without having a young puppy leaping and begging at the table.
Photographs of of young ones appear throughout the book and only add to this
excellent book.
There are several references in the book to problem puppies which the Monks have
taken in and helped in owner survival. It is most interesting to see how the problems are solved and in only a caring and kind way.
Please enjoy this fine book as I have with my two Whippet puppies.
Book Review: Fantastic, comprehensive best book for puppy training Summary: 5 Stars
Okay so this is I dont even know what number of book I've read thus far for puppy training. I've read the dog whisperer (not Cesar Milan), two of Cesar Milans book, The other side of the leash, ASPCA dog training, etc, etc you get the idea.
This is the best book I've read thus far and if you only have the money for one puppy book get this one.
Why I like it. I have a high strung lab. Sorry positive reinforcement and replacement just don't work for the jumping, nipping etc. This book taught me how to handle the nipping and in two days my puppies nipping was improved 98%. That's a big bravo in my book. Housetraining schedule, crate training, temperament testing for puppies, basic dog obedience. How to socialize your dog, collars for training. I give this book five stars and is a must have for puppy raising. I also like their other book by the way but this is the best for puppies.
Book Review: The Best Puppy "How To" Book for Intellectuals Summary: 5 Stars
If you are past the point in your life where "Puppies for Dummies" is of any use to you, if you have had a dog and understand the basics, if you are ready for the more advanced tutorial in really understanding your relationship with your puppy from the first minute he/she is born, if you know that "picking a puppy" is more important than choosing "the cute one," then this book is for you. It is not a training tool, and there are no chapters on teaching sit, stay or come. This will give you a critical understanding of the dog's mental development and what to expect at different stages of the dog's life from birth forward. Get this book AND READ IT before you decide on your next puppy. Also, there is an appendix with "exercises" to do with your puppy prospects to help you choose the puppy with the right personality for you or your family, and it REALLY works!
