Book Review: Amazing what a bit of muslin can do...

When I started flipping pages in this book all I could say was, "Wow". The pictures are great showing the amazing things a little bit of fabric can do.
The instructions seem clear enough, but I haven't actually tried any of the techniques yet. I am still planning my attack. There are so many different things I want to try, it's tough to decide what to do first. I have mostly been enjoying looking through the book & pondering where I could use the ones I like best. I see overlapping tucking on a bodice, smocking at the waist of a dress, darts, godets, the list is endless.
I think this book could be useful for anyone, beginner to advanced, if only for ideas. The textures created by some of the applications are just incredible.

This book puts in one place all the different ways you know how to work fabric: pleats, gathers, darts, etc. All the little things you learned over the years and never got to categorize, plus a few new ones you didn't think of yet. This lady deserves a standing ovation for putting together what so many of us know, but never put to paper. The fact that all the work is done on white material adds to the ability to see exactly what she is doing; no prints or stripes to detract from the simplistic beauty of worked fabric. This book is good for any one, be you beginner or experienced sewing hand. It has, in a short 2 weeks, become one of my favorite books and earned the top shelf honors!Book Review: great book

In the foreword, the editor mention that she kept having to give extra money to the author for more unbleached muslin fabric and after looking at this book I can understand why. This book gives detailed and readable information on manipulating fabric in ways you couldn't imagine. If I'd had this book 10 years ago when I was doing a visual arts diploma in textiles, I'd have probably used it as the focus for my work. The book concentrates on showing the techniques and leaves it to the readers imgination as to how to use them. I reckon this book would be great for art students, people who like to make unusual quilts and people who like making clothes that are a bit different.Book Review: Useful

This book has so much information in it, given in a general way that makes it easy to apply it to some thing very different. For example, I wanted to make a valance but I didn't have enough material for the pattern. I was just flipping through this book to preview it and I came on the explanation of making a flounce. As I looked at it, I realized the flounce looked just like I wanted my valance to look, so I used the instructions and made a beautiful valance using much less fabric than the pattern called for. It was simple and finished in no time. I can't wait to try something else.Book Review: Best sewing book ever!

I LOVE this book. I dispaired of finding anything new or interesting, but this is it! Don't just take fabric and make it into a garment (or a slipcover, or placemats, or...)--take fabric and make it into different fabric. Twist it, turn it, tuck it, pleat it, double it, gather it, this way, that way, round, square, triangular, smocking, shark's teeth, cartridge pleats: enough for anyone. This is an idea book, and now my head is so full of them they're pouring out the ends of my fingers! Fun, fun, fun. Thank you Colette Wolff.
