Book Reviews of The Arkadians

Book Review: A story of a storyteller
Summary: 5 Stars

"This is the tale of a jackass and a young bean counter, a girl of marvels and mysteries, horsemen swift as wind, Goat Folk, Daughters of Morning, voyages, tempests, terrors, disasters. And the occasional rainbow."
So begins The Arkadians. Ladies and Gentlemen, this book delivers all it promises and more.
Anyone who has read the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander knows that they were inspired by Welsh Mythology. In The Arkadians, Alexander takes it one step further, choosing Greek mythology as his inspiration this time. Those familiar with the legends will enjoy Alexander's take on the stories, and will easily be able to see how they might have been altered over time to take on the form we now know as Greek mythology. This is not to say that everything has it's parallel, several of my favorite adventures in this tale are original Alexander, but fit as surely as if they were pieces of a puzzle.

Lloyd Alexander's characters are no less enjoyable than the story, and it's easy to believe that they might be real people. From Lucian to Joy-in-the-Dance, to Catch-a-tick of the Goat Folk, to King Bromios, yes, even to 'Clever Oudeis," the characters are believable, fleshed out, and enjoyable all the way to the end.

This book is an excellent read, not just for children. Anyone who enjoys a good story will enjoy this one, no matter the age.
