Book Reviews of The Apprentice- Tess GerritsenBook Review: An Outstanding Thriller - Sequel to "The Surgeon" & Book 2 in the Jane Rizzoli Series Summary: 5 Stars
The Surgeon: A NovelThe Keepsake: A Novel
"The Apprentice" is the second in a series of New York Times best selling author Tess Gerritsen's Jane Rizzoli/ Dr. Maura Isles thrillers. Ms. Gerritsen is actually Dr. Gerritsen. She received her medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco. While she was on maternity leave she began to write fiction. Her medical background is very important to this series, as the forensic and medical details involving crime scenes and victims are extremely accurate. Fans of medical thrillers, police procedurals and TV programs, such as "CSI" and "Bones," should really enjoy this book. I would recommend reading "The Surgeon" first, although it, and "The Apprentice", are both stand alone novels. The "The Apprentice," however, is a "follow-up" book and is somewhat dependent on its precursor for optimal understanding of the plot.
Boston homicide detective, Jane Rizzoli, is still badly shaken & scarred, (emotionally and physically), by her near death experience in the previous novel, at the hands of the macabre serial killer, Warren Hoyt, "The Surgeon." She thought she had put him in jail forever but is still coming to terms with the ordeal - with being a victim rather than the one in charge. Her healing process receives a severe setback when a new killer emerges on the scene. His MO is similar to "The Surgeon's. The media aptly dubs this new psychopath "The Dominator," because his murder method adds a new & grizzley twist to that of Hoyt's. When Hoyt escapes from the high security prison where he is incarcerated, and appears to hook-up with the new killer, this dark and gritty thriller becomes "unputdownable." Is Jane still a target?
Jane and her new partner, Detective Korzak, are joined in the investigation by FBI agent Gabriel Dean - a bizarre trio to say the least. And Dr. Maura Isles, a medical examiner who works the crime scenes, is introduced here.
The compelling plot and multiple storylines are fast paced and deftly handled. The forensic details, pathology, profiling, descriptions of the painstaking investigative work among the task force and their search for the serial murderers are riveting.
The characters, dark though they may be, are really well developed, especially that of Detective Rizzoli. Her personality is prickly, and rightly so. All her life she has had to compete with her Alpha male brothers and now she is the only female homicide detective on the Boston force. Her work-life is a constant struggle against the police department's "old boy" attitude. Comic relief enters along with Jane's dysfunctional family. And, fortunately, there is also some romance in store for this energetic, wild-haired woman.
Warning - if blood and gore REALLY disturb you - think Hannibal Lecter - then stay away from the Jane Rizzoli books. As I am not the queasy sort, I really like these well written thrillers and have read most of them, each getting better and better.

Summary of The Apprentice- Tess GerritsenThe bestselling author of The Surgeon returns?and so does that chilling novel?s diabolical villain. Though held behind bars, Warren Hoyt still haunts a helpless city, seeming to bequeath his evil legacy to a student all-too-diligent . . . and all-too-deadly.
THE APPRENTICE
It is a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the city?s woes is a series of shocking crimes, in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death.
The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently removed from the city?s streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that?s what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her?literally and figuratively?she is determined to finally end Hoyt?s awful influence . . . even if it means receiving more resistance from her all-male homicide squad.
But Rizzoli isn?t counting on the U.S. government?s sudden interest. Or on meeting Special Agent Gabriel Dean, who knows more than he will tell. Most of all, she isn?t counting on becoming a target herself, once Hoyt is suddenly free, joining his mysterious blood brother in a vicious vendetta. . . .
Filled with superbly created characters?and the medical and police procedural details that are her trademark? The Apprentice is Tess Gerritsen at her brilliant best. Set in a stunning world where evil is easy to learn and hard to end, this is a thriller by a master who could teach other authors a thing or two.
From the Hardcover edition. Boston detective Jane Rizzoli hasn't completely recovered from the near-death experience at the hands of a serial killer (The Surgeon) that left her scarred and scared, but that doesn't keep her from going after a copycat murderer whose modus operandi is disturbingly familiar. Warren Hoyt may still be behind bars, but Jane thinks there's a connection between him and the man the police call the Dominator, based on the way this new fiend subdues and violates his victims before he kills them. Political interference from an FBI agent who seems to know more about the Dominator than anyone else only intensifies Jane's determination to solve the case. When Hoyt escapes from prison and teams up with his blood brother to take revenge on the policewoman who put him there, the pace of this truly frightening thriller picks up and drives the narrative to its violent conclusion. --Jane Adams
