Book Reviews of The Angel's Game

Book Review: As Good if not Better Than its Predecessor
Summary: 5 Stars

Like its predecessor The Shadow of the Wind (hardly a prequel), Carlos Ruiz Zafon returns to 1920s Barcelona for The Angel's Game. From the opening paragraph I was hooked:

"A writer never forgets the first time he accepted a few coins or a word of praise in exchange for a story. He will never forget the sweet poison of vanity in his blood and the belief that, if he succeeds in not letting anyone discover his lack of talent, the dream of literature will provide him with a roof over his head, a hot meal at the end of the day, and what he covets the most: his name printed on a miserable piece of paper that surely will outlive him. A writer is condemned to remember that moment, because from then on he is doomed and his soul has a price."

The story centers on David Martin, born to poverty, abandoned by his mother, and witness to his father's murder. David, with the help of his friend and mentor, Pedro Vidal, becomes a popular pulp novelist, writing dark tales of the underworld under a pseudonym, Ignatius B. Samson. When Vidal begins to struggle with his novel, his assistant, Cristina, turns to David for help, and David works nearly round the clock to ghost write the pages Cristina brings him while working on his own novel, The Steps of Heaven, as well as the serial stories, City of the Damned. But it is Vidal's novel that wins critical acclaim, while David's is panned and forgotten. Only much later does Vidal admit to David that he would be a fool not to have recognized his own published words as those of his student.

Yet David's novel catches the eye of a sinister French editor, Andreas Corelli, who offers David a fortune to write a book unlike anything that has ever existed-a book with the power to change hearts and minds. David is hesitant, but when Vidal announces his plans to wed Cristina, with whom David has fallen in love (she eschews David for the serial penny novels he writes), David begins to waver. When he discovers his mother's whereabouts, he has delivered to her an inscribed copy of his novel. He watches from the shadows as she exits the shop where she works as a seamstress to open the package. When she reaches the corner she drops the book into a trashcan and the stage is set for David to sell his soul to Corelli, to whom he refers as the Boss.

David takes on an assistant, Isabella, who wishes to learn from David how to write. It is obvious to the reader, but sadly not to David, how she feels about him. When Isabella learns of the project on which David is working (it is hinted that David's work will result in World War II and the real-life horrors of the latter 20th century) she tries to turn him aside.

As David becomes more immersed in the project, he curiously begins to look for answers to clues about the previous owner of the old mansion in which he lives, and into Corelli's past. What he uncovers is filled with murder, mystery and intrigue, and David himself becomes the prime suspect in a string of murders. When he reneges on his agreement with the Boss, Corelli takes from him what he cherishes most-Cristina. Cristina and David had planned to flee Barcelona when she confesses to David that her marriage to Vidal was loveless, an agreement with her father, on his deathbed, that Vidal provide for her security.

David is forced to flee Barcelona alone and, years later, writes to Isabella. In return he receives a letter from her husband, Daniel Sempere, that includes a letter she wrote to David a few years earlier, suffering cholera, not knowing whether he would ever read it. At its close she writes:

"I wanted to write to you because I'd like you to remember me and, one day, if you have someone as I have my little Daniel, I'd like you to talk to that someone about me and, through your words, make me live forever."

The Angel's Game is loosely tied to The Shadow of the Wind through Daniel Sempere and the Sempere & Sons bookshop, as well as the Cemetery of Forgotten Books:

"This place is a mystery. A Sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and the soul of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens. In this place, books no longer remembered by anyone, books that are lost in time, live forever, waiting for the day when they will reach a new reader's hands, a new spirit..."

The Angel's Game is equal parts mystery, melodrama and gothic romance. It is also a story about obsession, in love and with literature, although one need not be a writer to connect with David on that level. One need not be a writer to understand that "we all require big and small lies in order to survive, just as much as we need air... if during one single day, from dawn to dusk, we could see the naked reality of the world, and of ourselves, we would either take our own lives or lose our minds."

It's easy to see why Carlos Ruiz Zafon is one of the most widely read novelists of our time. A wonderful storyteller, his work has been translated into more than forty languages. The Angel's Game is the second in a promised trilogy, although they need not be read in order. Darker than its predecessor, The Angel's Game is nonetheless a satisfying read and highly recommended.

Summary of The Angel's Game

From master storyteller Carlos Ruiz Zafon, author of the international phenomenon The Shadow of the Wind, comes The Angel?s Game ? a dazzling new page-turner about the perilous nature of obsession, in literature and in love.

The whole of Barcelona stretched out at my feet and I wanted to believe that when I opened those windows ? my new windows ? each evening its streets would whisper stories to me, secrets in my ear, that I could catch on paper and narrate to whomever cared to listen?

In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man, David Martin, makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city?s underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house lie photographs and letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner.

Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he struggles with an impossible love. Close to despair, David receives a letter from a reclusive French editor, Andreas Corelli, who makes him the offer of a lifetime. He is to write a book unlike anything that has ever existed ? a book with the power to change hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, and perhaps more. But as David begins the work, he realizes that there is a connection between his haunting book and the shadows that surround his home.

Once again, Zafon takes us into a dark, gothic universe first seen in The Shadow of the Wind and creates a breathtaking adventure of intrigue, romance, and tragedy. Through a dizzyingly constructed labyrinth of secrets, the magic of books, passion, and friendship blend into a masterful story.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón on The Angel's Game

Years ago, when I began working on my fifth novel, The Shadow of the Wind, I started toying around with the idea of creating a fictional universe that would be articulated through four interconnected stories in which we would meet some of the same characters at different times in their lives, and see them from different perspectives where many plots and subplots would tie around in knots for the reader to untie. It sounds somewhat pretentious, but my idea was to add a twist to the story and provide the reader with what I hoped would be a stimulating and playful reading experience. Since these books were, in part, about the world of literature, books, reading and language, I thought it would be interesting to use the different novels to explore those themes through different angles and to add new layers to the meaning of the stories.

At first I thought this could be done in one book, but soon I realized it would make Shadow of the Wind a monster novel, and in many ways, destroy the structure I was trying to design for it. I realized I would have to write four different novels. They would be stand-alone stories that could be read in any order. I saw them as a Chinese box of stories with four doors of entry, a labyrinth of fictions that could be explored in many directions, entirely or in parts, and that could provide the reader with an additional layer of enjoyment and play. These novels would have a central axis, the idea of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, set against the backdrop of a highly stylized, gothic and mysterious Barcelona. Since each novel was going to be complex and difficult to write, I decided to take one at a time and see how the experiment evolved on its own in an organic way.

It all sounds very complicated, but it is not. At the end of the day, these are just stories that share a universe, a tone and some central themes and characters. You don?t need to care or know about any of this stuff to enjoy them. One of the fun things about this process was it allowed me to give each book a different personality. Thus, if Shadow of the Wind is the nice, good girl in the family, The Angel?s Game would be the wicked gothic stepsister. Some readers often ask me if The Angel?s Game is a prequel or a sequel. The answer is: none of these things, and all of the above. Essentially The Angel?s Game is a new book, a stand-alone story that you can fully enjoy and understand on its own. But if you have already read The Shadow of the Wind, or you decide to read it afterwards, you?ll find new meanings and connections that I hope will enhance your experience with these characters and their adventures.

The Angel?s Game has many games inside, one of them with the reader. It is a book designed to make you step into the storytelling process and become a part of it. In other words, the wicked, gothic chick wants your blood. Beware. Maybe, without realizing, I ended up writing a monster book after all... Don?t say I didn?t warn you, courageous reader. I?ll see you on the other side. --Carlos Ruiz Zafón
