Book Reviews of The Almost Moon: A NovelBook Review: Read it with an open mind Summary: 5 Stars
Recently I have started and quit several novels because I just did not find them compelling. Not so The Almost Moon. I suppose it was like watching a train wreck, I couldn't quit looking even though I found it difficult to think about.
I felt like I was being dragged along by my hair, I had to see how it all came out. Minute by minute, the story unfolded, slowly, slowly revealing the dramatic events: Agoraphobic mother, long suffering daughter, misunderstood (misunderstanding) ex husband, murder, cover up, consequences, regrets.
It seems that many novels are the same story told a different way. This is not a story often told. Like Lucky and The Lovely Bones, this is a dark story, well told, character driven and compelling. It must be read with an open mind, a mind waiting to learn something about mental illness, and how it effects those near-by.
Book Review: Almost Perfect! Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVED: The Lovely Bones, and although several people told me that this book was totally bizarre, I had to read it and judge for myself.
Once I began Almost Moon, I could not put it down. I could understand how a 49 year old woman, a product of a dysfunctional, mentally ill family, could snap under extreme pressure and murder her elderly mother who suffered from dementia. This dark, serious novel, made me smile on more than one occasion by the author's use of clever writing techniques. I loved the way that the entire novel took place in a 24 hour period as well.
Alice Sebold did not disappoint me with this latest GEM. Read it for yourself and do not be mislead by some of the negative reviews you may read. You will miss a unusually wonderful book!
Book Review: Such a Talented Writer Summary: 5 Stars
I was profoundly affected by Alice Sebold's novel, "Lovely Bones," feeling that she was one of the best authors I had ever read. Her imageries and plot nuances are so very creative and unique, unlike anything I had ever read before(and I'm a very avid reader.) I became a big fan with "Lovely Bones" and couldn't wait to read "Almost Moon." I was not disappointed. She makes her characters so believable and so familiar and she draws one in to her book completely. I didn't feel that "Almost Moon" was quite as strong a novel as "Lovely Bones," but I surely felt that it was an amazing novel written by a very talented author.
Book Review: the journey of a woman Summary: 5 Stars
This book has a very intense theme. The Character does things that she never thought she would, and because of that she sees things that she is experiencing, from a different prospective. As she goes through her day, trying to figure out her mother, her father and herself, she encounters characters that will change her life and characters that already changed her life forever. To this character, her father was a big figure in her life, as some people can relate. when you read this book, it might shock you but as you keep going, you understand why the character did what she did.
Book Review: Black comedy at its best! Summary: 5 Stars
Lighten up, folks. I was laughing out loud from page one. This is an honest book about honest life situations, illnesses and emotions. I am 67 and live in a retirement center with a dementia unit (I am not there, yet!). Life around here is epitomized by the comedy and drama masks--as is most of anyone's life if they are honest. If you think you have never wanted to kill your mother, you are either forgetful or in denial. Thanks, Alice, for a wonderful book and for telling it like it is for those of us who don't hide from reality.
