Book Review: THE gold standard for Lightroom users - whether first time or expert

Adobe's 'Lightroom' (LR) was designed from the ground up for digital photographers, featuring non-destructive color management and deep retrieval capability. Users new to LR ought to have a measure of comfort (readily mastered in Photoshop Elements) with RAW ["digital negative"] processing, as well as with Adobe's inscrutable keyboard shortcuts. Although LR is quite intuitive, and its manual uncommonly instructive, novices will appreciate the easy-flowing introductory walk-though provided in this (supplemented) book.
Martin Evening is one of the original band of Lightroom evangelists, gathering his online "rough cuts" for beta version evaluators into a cohesive book. Although the printed book has some rough edges (like LR 1.0 itself), Mr Evening has done an awesome makeover of the hardcopy book with an online version 1.1 supplement (as LR 1.1 did) that smoothly and concisely takes the reader through the arcane new mazes of sharpening, lens distortion and noise reduction. The supplement is further enhanced by the polished change from a "how-I-do-it" to a "you-ought-to-try this" writing style. Although illustrated with Mac screenshots, PC equivalents are provided seamlessly so that Windows users need not feel the least slighted. The print book, paired with the print-ready 1.1 supplement, sets a high standard ... instantly raising the bar for Lightroom guides.
A few niggles: one must flip between hard and electronic copies to tie loose ends together; wisely, the author has paginated the full-color 170-page electronic supplement (pdf format) sequentially so that you can add new page numbers to the book's index. Although the basics of keywording and image retrieval are covered adequately, this section could dig a bit deeper to help you find that Norman castle showing Donna, but not Billie; for the time being, that search remains a self-help travel adventure. Readers might appreciate a table of keyboard shortcuts at the end of a module's chapter as a welcome counterpoint to Adobe's drearily exhaustive tabulation. [I understand that Mr Evening is readying a further-refined Adobe Press edition for the inevitable LR version 2.0]
This softcover plus 1.1 electronic supplement duo is a highly recommended, well rounded, finely honed and richly illustrated guidebook for all -- from first-look newbie to software virtuoso. A modern Lightroom "Bible", it serves equally well as introductory guide, advanced learning tool, or reference guide. First users will get up to speed quickly, aided by well-placed screenshots; high-volume professionals will find the industrial strength workflow and file organization tips invaluable.
