The A-List
In Zoey Dean's The A-List, she provides very detailed imagery from the surroundings of Los Angeles to the characters that are introduced in the novel. Dean does a fantastic job of creating the typical Beverly Hills environment along with the glamorous girls that reside in this exciting city. From the beautiful faces and the gorgeous hair of the girls to the elaborate wedding ceremony, Dean causes the reader to feel as if he/she is in the presence of the characters. She uses intricate details that are used to describe people and scenes, arouse emotion, and create vivid images. Because of Dean's intriguing writing style and her sensory details, readers will likely be caught up in the glamorous world that Dean has created.
Dean does a very good job describing the beautiful people in her novel. When Dee is introduced, she says that Dee has the "flaxen hair, upturned nose, and wide blue eyes of a porcelain doll, and a perfect size 0 little body." Dean describes Dee so precisely that the reader feels as if Dee could be standing in front of him/her. Dean depicts Anna as she is preparing to go on her date with Ben by saying, "A single touch of pink cream blush on her high cheekbones, a coat of understated brown mascara, a nude lip gloss, the tiniest drop of Chanel No. 5 behind her ears, and she was good to go." This description shows Anna's natural beauty. Dean describes Cammie's most outstanding trait, her hair: "Her signature `I-just-got-out-of-bed" strawberry blond locks fell halfway down her back, looking stunning against her pale green Balenciaga leather corset dress." This well-defined description allows the reader to have a full view of Cammie in all of her beauty. I love the way that Dean depicts these exotic girls because it really allows the reader to visualize them.
Dean also does a fabulous job depicting the scenery and the environment of Beverly Hills. At Jackson Sharpe and Poppy Sinclair's wedding, Dean describes the wedding chairs by saying that the seats "had all been reupholstered for the occasion in gold silk hand-painted with curlicues of red roses." She conveys that the entire building is decorated in elaborate red and gold bows; therefore, the reader can definitely imagine how articulate the hand-painted chairs are. Dean explicates the entire wedding reception, also. She depicts every single part of the reception when she says that "floodlights beamed skyward, like at a movie premiere. A giant circus tent had been erected with countless round tables and chairs that circled a wooden dance floor. The walls were decorated with floor-to-ceiling posters from Jackson and Poppy's films, and an orchestra on a raised stage played the love theme from Romeo and Juliet." From this accurate description, the reader feels as if he/she could be present at this extravagant reception. Dean illustrates Ben and Anna walking towards Ben's yacht through the marina. Dean states, "Hand in hand, Ben led Anna into a sprawling marina, past dozens of sailboats and pleasure crafts. Their footsteps on the wooden planks echoed across the still waters of the inlet." Dean shows her writing talent by describing the sound of Ben and Anna's footsteps on the wood. This allows the reader to feel as if he/she is an onlooker, watching Ben and Anna walking down the plank.
Overall, Dean did a sensational job narrating this book. The way that she depicted her scenes and chose her words revealed a lot about the scene or character being described. Dean's first-class imagery has caused millions of teens to flock to this book and give them the thrill of seeing how the alluring, super-rich live. If Dean keeps up her sensational imagery, the rest of The A-List series will do very well.
