Book Reviews of TestimonyBook Review: A very professional job Summary: 5 Stars
Connoisseurs of American literature should begin this novel at page 103. There they will find the key to its fictional techniques, its central subject and its radiating ethical and moral dilemmas. It is simply a brief allusion to William Faulkner's classic "As I Lay Dying". Anita Shreve does it all over again with, if anything, even greater professionalism than Faulkner. I agree with all of the other very favorable reviews. How many other serious contemporary American novelists can display such a mastery of plot, point of view, characterization and sheer narrative verve in an in-depth exploration of everyday moral dilemmas? She is a real professional.Testimony: A Novel
Book Review: Couldn't put it down Summary: 5 Stars
There are not many books that I pick up that I cannot put back down. Even some of Shreve's other titles have been a bit on the long side. But this one really got under my skin. It is believable. It is heartwrenching. It makes you angry with everyone in the book for not stepping up to the bat and changing the course of events. It makes you consider the far-reaching effects of bad decisions. So many people making bad decisions- some little decisions - some big decisions - and every one of them culminating in to a disaster.
Days after reading this book, I am still thinking about it. It was too real and too close to the truths of my own life.
Shreve is awesome.
Book Review: Another riveting story Summary: 5 Stars
I am a big fan of Anita Shreve and have read all her works. This book really grabs your attention from the start - a relevant story of consequences of one mistake that snowballed into tragedy. It could happen to anyone, anywhere. Extremely entertaining and it touched my heart too. I gave it to my grown daughters to read simply because it makes you stop and think before you indulge yourself in guilty pleasures that could really come back to haunt in a big way. Not preachy, but thought-provoking and entertaining all at the same time. A 5 star read for sure! Kathy
Book Review: A Gripping Read Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not a big fan of books where each chapter is told from a different character's POV but Anita Shreve makes it work in this gripping story. The way the technique is used here gives you a 360 view of the situation, the hows and whys, and how events that are seemingly unrelated can have devastating effects. Testimony is the story of students at a private school and how one decision can change everything. Shreve captures each person's voice, and they are all unique. Exquisite writing. I couldn't put it down. This is a must-read.
Book Review: Shreve's Best Yet Summary: 5 Stars
This is the sort of brilliant novel that not only entertains with breathless pacing but educates us at the same time. Watching this scandal unfold and cause ruin in dozens of lives, warns us about the consequences of our own actions while it teaches us understanding for the inexplicably reckless actions of others.
There are no wicked people in this story, just fully drawn characters with very human flaws. My heart broke for all of them, even the less admirable ones with the biggest weaknesses.
