Book Review: Telecommunications Make This Book Obsolete

Researchers in telecommunications should know that the information superhighway has made case rulings and government agency documents available free or inexpensively to law students. It's true that big leather-bound casebooks and their periodic supplements are a law school tradition going back for centuries, but old-time instructors and publishers need to face the fact that online services are available to students and that casebooks should no longer simply reprint information that is available for free elsewhere. Hence, some of the main casebooks can still justify their existence if they synthesize reprinted case information in ways that will help students learn deeper concepts. That's the case for the primary "Telecommunications Law and Policy" text, which is outstanding and clearly constructed for helping the student master the field (I even gave that casebook 5 stars in this forum).
But supplements that merely reprint documentation from recent cases are outdated even before they hit the presses, thanks to LexisNexis, WestLaw, and other free (to students) online services. It's time to stop charging students for simple reprints of information that is available free elsewhere. Granted, this particular casebook supplement is a little better than most, as it shares some of the great strengths of its parent casebook - especially the notes and questions that surely enhance the student's learning experience. But this could be done online just as well. A URL back in the parent casebook, pointing to a website that contains the information found in this supplement, would more than suffice. [~doomsdayer520~]
