I really enjoy this book! I'm new to the mandolin with a minimal guitar background, and this book definitely is comprehend-able to a novice like me.

Book Review: not too shabby Summary: 4 Stars
What I like about this mandolin method is that is slow, steady going. There are several in the Hal Leonard and Mel Bay methods that are so difficult that you'll likely end up getting discouraged, but this one proceeds by slow, steady steps. At 70 pages, it's kinda long for a mandolin method, and at no point are you ever gonna feel like you're up against some monster song that you simply can't do. No, no: it's a gradual incline.
The thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't take you very far. By the end of the book, you're playing simple melodies in G and F (one sharp, one flat), with relatively un-hairy counting patterns. That's not very impressive. The Hal Leonard method, on the other hand, takes you much farther in fewer pages.
Another thing that annoys me about this method is that it frequently tells you to use your fourth finger at the 7th fret rather than an open string which would apparently do just fine. Was the purpose merely to add an additional element of difficulty so you get practice with the fourth finger, or was there a more subtle tonal reason for this? In either case, the book should have said so. As it was, I was left with the feeling I was missing something.
Book Review: great book Summary: 4 Stars
Awesome little starter book. Gets you playing basic tunes within a couple days. I wanted to enjoy playing the mandolin, not make it another task such as learning scales before you can play anything. It goes in one string at a time. I learned about one string a day, and by day three I was playing the basics "Merrily we Roll Along", "Jingle Bells", "Jimmy Crack Corn" and others. I have played the sax years ago and it seem to be a lot of work. I wanted something to "pick" while watching commercals on TV! I would have gone 5 stars if the book came with a CD. Many people told me this is the book to start with, and they were right BUY IT!!!
Book Review: Great beginers book! Summary: 4 Stars
This book was an excellent beginners book for people with no musical background. I have played piano for over 20 years and wanted to try Mandolin to play Italian songs. Just follow the book and practice and you will be playing Mandolin in no time! I am glad I purchased this book! I highly recommend it.
