Book Review: Inexpensive and interesting

Two nice things about this package: the text is easy to follow (good for a self-learner) but very interesting and the 2 CDs demonstrate Old English pronunciation. In addition to those items it is reasonably priced.

Atherton takes you step by step into Old English, introducing you Anglo-Saxon history and culture along the way. You are never overwhelmed and texts, whether they be the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, Beowulf, The Seafarer, Genesis, The Dream of the Rood, etc., are presented in small doses. Difficulty naturally increases as you move through the text. Pronunciation can be picked up from the CDs and explanations or cues in the book. Essentially, by wading through this course you get a survey of Anglo-Saxon history, literature, and culture that puts old English in context. And when you are done you will be equipped to move on to more challenging studies. Worked well for me!
