Book Review: A Great Book, But Maybe Not For Absolute Beginners
Summary: 4 Stars
As a guitarist who wants to double on mandolin, I think this book is a perfect introduction to the instrument. Basic chords and melody are presented clearly, and more advanced techniques/soloing ideas are included to allow the player learn at his/her own pace. I'm working through the basic versions of each song, and will try to tackle the more advanced variations on my second time through the book. True, tune tempos are fairly brisk, but adaptive software such as The Amazing Slow Downer (a must for anyone aspiring to cop licks from their heroes) can be obtained at a reasonable price, and is a great help in learning the nuances of a given piece. This book also has a solid "Recommended Listening" section and a short list of additional instructional materials.
