Book Review: convicting, inspirational, and exciting

This book has been the catalyst for change not only in my parenting, but also in my personal spiritual walk. It lays out how we are to allow God's Word to function in our lives and our parenting as He intended it to. Practical examples are given and relevent scriptures are cited for numerous common issues.
I had a paradigm shift about correcting my daughter's disrepect toward me and my husband. Yes it's sinning against me, but more importantly, and what needs to be stressed is, it's sinning against God. Her relationship with God should be stressed as the primary one, the most important. Of course you don't neglect the others but from an early age, you teach them how God is central- no matter what area of their life.
The part where the author talks about spanking didn't make me uncomfortable (I RARELY spank). I appreciated that he stressed not punishing a child's sin in anger (THAT would be sinful) but after discussion/instruction. If parents followed his take on it, abuse would not occur. I still will rarely spank, but now I won't have confused feelings about it when I do (our society is increasingly intolerant of it). There is a time for it and it is biblical if done correctly.
I wish the author would further expand in examples like he has given on other matters (maybe in a future edition) on how to reconcile in the child's mind how when we sin it displeases God, falls short of what he requires of us, but He isn't a stern taskmaster we can never seem to please. He's loving and forgiving. The author doesn't convey God as a taskmaster, I just wished I knew better how he would talk to children about this.
I am so glad I got this book as early as I did in my "parenting career". I highly recommend it to any parent who wants their child to grow up with a right heart not just right behavior.
