Being a novice in the world of the Tao, I found this book to be incredibly valuable. The explanations in the beginning of the book are fascinating and the translation is beautiful. Adding the word for word section to the book has been very helpful as I have read other translations and paraphrases of the Tao Te Ching in understanding where others differ and how they got there. This is a must have book for anyone seriously interested in Chinese philosophy and spirituality.Book Review: For detailed study

I have spent time comparing various editions and translations of the tao te ching because it's content is necessarily so difficult to translate. By offering word by word meanings in addition to a nice full translation, this book has condensed information that would otherwise take a small library. Very highly recommended for people who want to study, not just read, this historical document.Book Review: Definitive is better.

I have Stephen Mitchell's version of the Tao Te Ching which I just received and read today and I have to say I was VERY disappointed in it. I would say it's not so much a translation as a paraphrase of his own thoughts with some of those of Lao Tzu blended in to make it seem like a translation of the Tao Te Ching. This is a much, much better version.Book Review: Brilliant, poignant, has the potential to change lives.

I don't identify myself as a Taoist, Buddhist, or anything else, but this simple book, that can be read in under an hour, is one of the most brilliant and inspiring texts I've ever read.
