Book Review: Breakfast club of the 21st century

Even though the drawing may turn you off initially, the message and the humanity of Tales of the Closet is exceedingly rewarding. It is a relevant piece of pop culture that deals with the many hot issues in the lives of today's youth. Throughout the graphic novel, six characters from different backgrounds come to deal with the shame and secrecy of being homosexual, but they also come to recognize the strength and camaraderie that comes from uniting together. This novel is greatly appropriate for this time where we are negotiating with and learning to be more accepting of differences. And the graphic novel not only deals with sexuality, but also different ethnicities, class, and social status.
The art was emotive and the story was very well organized and written with clear purpose and direction. I especially appreciated how the characters' lives and stories were seamlessly integrated with each other's, so as not to create confusion. Overall, I appreciated this graphic novel and its homage to everyday people and the struggles they carry. Everyone should read this touching and true-of-its-time novel.
