Book Review: Entertaining and Diverting

The theme of this anthology is travel. The authors did a fine job of conveying that sense of adventure, the awe and wonderment of a foreign land, the delights of its culture and of its people. The romanticism of taking chances, of stepping outside of yourself, of doing something totally spontaneous. Like going to the airport and just picking a destination, as in "Last-Minute Train to Moscow" by Timothy Jacobson.
The short stories in this anthology are the ultimate escapism, exotically flavored with a unique blend of adventure and discovery, chance encounters and mysterious encounters, the connecting of old friends and the meeting of new friends. Highly erotic and sensual, evocative and provocative, all of these tales deliver an immensely satisfying read, diverting us, entertaining us, and pleasantly heating our bodies.
"The Tower" by John Simpson
An American, who's been to London before, decides it's high time he finally visited the London Tower. He starts checking out the eye candy, and soon zeros in on one guy in particular. Soon two becomes three, and while seriously hot, the amusing twist in the end (no pun intended) is what really made this story.
"Roman Etiquette" by William Holden
While on holiday in England, two men's paths cross several times, culminating with an erotic encounter at the roman baths. With very little dialog, which intensifies the sensual mood of this is a well-written story, the author beautifully captures the desire and longing between the two lovers.
"On the Road Ahead" by Stephen Osborne
A man, who's always played it safe, decides it's time for a little adventure and takes a Christmas holiday in England. This intriguing little story had a surprising twist, giving us a bittersweet story with a mysterious encounter.
"London Nights" by Shane Allison
Fed up with his cheating boyfriend and dissatisfying job, a stockbroker escapes to his favorite vacation spot, London. Tense and provocative, the author keeps us on the edge as the stockbroker finds a little more adventure than he bargained for when he encounters a street punk.
"American Pu**y" by Keith Williams
Wanting to find some quiet time to work on a book he's writing, a man agrees to watch an apartment in Paris for a vacationing family. But it's not all work, when the weekend comes and the man decides it's time for some play. Rowdy and humorous, the author that illustrates language barriers can lead to all sorts of interesting consequences.
"A & R: 2" by Marcus James
When a man hits the downward spiral because the object of his obsession neglects him, they take a trip to Paris trying to put the pieces back together. Deeply emotional, this story entertains in a very profound way.
"The Spy Who Did Me" by Brad Nichols
While on a month long European holiday, a man with an overactive imagination has a mysterious encounter on the midnight train to Zurich. An entertaining, action-packed tale that stimulates the imagination and body.
"Convergence" by Jean-Paul Batista
A British man on his way to Moscow encounters a manipulating German who has a few loose ends to tie up. But all is not as it seems, as this intensely stimulating read kept me firmly glued on the edge of my chair.
"Sightseer" by Simon Sheppard
Backpacking across Europe, tired of staying in the overcrowded hostel and yearning for adventure, Jason hooks up with a wealthy, mysterious Italian. This deeply complex story builds in intensity, until the revealing climatic ending.
"Italian Idol" by Joel A. Nichols
An impulsive sense of adventure and a language barrier puts two vacationing young men in awkward circumstances with the local Italian police. Entertainingly written with amusing awkward moments, followed by arousing hot cop action.
"Super Paradise" by Lew Bull
Two friends celebrate their fortieth birthdays together by taking a vacation to the beautiful Greek Island, Mykonos. The author wonderfully weaves in the local setting, with this warm, sensual story of a man who yearns for the passionate touch of his friend.
"Six Days Until New Year's" by D. E. LeFever
A writer while sightseeing in Morocco meets a local merchant. The two men connect, spending time together, enjoying each other's company while they tour the exotic local. Evocative and emotionally stirring story.
"Token of Morocco" by Shannon L. Yarbrough
While in Morocco with a friend who's part of a surfing expedition, a man hooks up with a group of hot Aussie surfers to experience the nightlife of Casablanca. Amusing dialog and an entertaining story, as the young American is delighted and overwhelmed by the Aussies' and their games.
"Level Playing Field" by T. Hitman
This is an absolutely hilarious and original story of three highly competitive friends who travel the globe experiencing the thrill of extreme sports and one-upmanship. But things heat up between the friends when after an exciting day of jeeping in the Gobi Dunes, something is revealed about one of them.
"Paradise, Cheri" by David Holly
Interesting use of switching points of view, as two different narrators tell the tale of a man's vacation in Haiti, and his fascination for a particular type of male's body part. This gem of a story is flavored with the delights of the Haitian culture and language, along with a delightful sense of humor. (make sure you read the author's bio blurb for the rest of the story)
"Swarthy Strangers" by Jeff Funk
As a man waits for his flight to Costa Rica, he reminisces of past encounters he had in other airports, while remembering an unattainable man. This enjoyable story reads like two separate tales, as the author weaves the past with the present, giving us a read that's both stimulating and sensually romantic.
"Little Yellow Cottage" by Robert James
A man traveling to Belize City to escape the disappointments of his life, shares a house with a local man. This lyrical, emotionally stirring tale romances the heart, as the narrative flows between past and present.
"And On My Birthday, Independence" by Michael T. Luongo
Backpacking through South America, a student has a momentous, chance encounter in Montevideo with a local younger man. Playful and romantic, with a hint of bittersweet.
"Surfer Dudes" by Neil Plakcy
At thirty-two it finally dawns on a man why his marriage didn't work out, along with other tell-tale signs, like lusting after Hawaiian surfer dudes on youtube. So he decides it's high time for a few changes in his life, which includes relocating to Hawaii. Written with an engaging sense of humor, this story entertains, arouses and inspires.
"Two Views of Mount Fuji" by M. Christian
A man is drawn to a land, its people, and the romanticism of its culture, so he dreams and carefully plans for his once in a lifetime adventure. The author vividly captures, with a good dose of humor, the daring sense of adventure, the sense of traveling to a foreign land and totally being out of your familiar environment, along with the longing to connect and blend. Insightful and very well done.
"Last-Minute Train to Moscow" by Timothy Jacobson
A college student spontaneously takes a trip to China indulging in its sites and wonder, when he impulsively decides to in indulge in another aspect of its culture. The story's heartwarming and bittersweet, beautifully conveying a young man's desire to step outside of himself.
"Kiwi Guide's Hot A**" by Jay Starre
An American looking for adventure hooks up with a tour group, and heads for New Zealand. The randy young man quickly sets his sights on a hunky tour guide, but soon there's another native that tempts him more. What really made this tale was the young man's lusty enthusiasm, the amusing native slang, and the seriously hot sexin'
