Book Reviews of Tales from the Boudoir

Book Review: A Fantasy With a Romantic Sub-Plot
Summary: 5 Stars

The book is told by Le Lit (the bed) who arrives at her master's house. Her master is Victoria, and Victoria makes it a habit of sleeping with men, hoping that sex will lead to love. But she is constantly disappointed. Le Lit is a lot like an impulsive child in the beginning, and she responds to her master and her master's lover, Rand, on this impulse. She falls in love with Rand and does everything she can (such as making her mattress soft and warm) to encourage him to stay after his sexual encounters with Victoria.

This is an adult story, and the themes are for a mature audience, though a teenager can probably learn a good lesson in it. As Le Lit grows in maturity, thanks to the aid of her dearest friend Horloge (the grandfather clock), she begins to understand the nature of true love versus lust. She also learns the difference between vengeance and mercy.

Victoria and a couple of others had a way of speaking that had a poetic ring to it, which makes sense since the author also writes poetry. It was short. It's 105 pages, so it is a quick read. The pacing was well done, so it didn't drag. I did enjoy the interaction between Le Lit and Horloge. I thought the appearance of Victoria's true love was in line with a fairy tale, making it seem more like a fantasy than plain fiction.

As for being a romance, I'd say the romance was a sub-plot but not the main focus. The main focus was on Le Lit's mature development, which I thought was very well done. I did have fun reading the book but would classify it as a fantasy.

Summary of Tales from the Boudoir

Le Lit is a bed with amnesia, who is about to embark on a new phase of her life with her master, Victoria. Accompany Le Lit on her journey, as she lives in the boudoir, "converses" with fellow inanimate objects, remembers her life as a pine tree in the forest, and even falls in love with one of her masters' lovers! Deeply steeped in animism, Tales from the Boudoir is sophisticated enough for even the most discerning reader!
