Book Reviews of TV Scenic Design, Second Edition

Book Review: Not what an art director needs
Summary: 1 Stars

Not many books have been written on scenic design, especially for TV. When I saw the editorial review of the first edition, describing it as fitting "..beginners.. as well as more experienced professionals..."(Image Technology), I was thrilled to find a book I could use for my work as art director or for teaching my students. I was prepared to pay the high price of the book, since it looked so promising.
When I got the book, my enthusiasm turned to disappointment. The book, in its attempt to cover every single aspect of TV scenic design ( and it does cover almost every angle), is no more than a shallow review of the principles of the craft. It is of no use to professionals, as it has nothing substantial to teach, and cannot help beginners, as no aspect is covered in depth.
Most disappointing is the lack of serious coverage of artistic issues of design, as well as theory. The images are of poor quality and the layout far from pleasing.
If you want to know something about scenic design for TV- this is the book for you. I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody who truly wants to learn or broaden their horizons in the field of art direction.
