Book Review: T is for excellenT

One of the things I really enjoyed about the early books in Sue Grafton's series of alphabetical mysteries featuring private eye Kinsey Millhone was their classic feel. By classic, I mean their resemblance to early private eye novels by authors like Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald, in which the private eye was more of an observer than an actual character. As the series went on, however, Kinsey got better defined (and the novels got longer), but still the premise was the same: she'd be hired to investigate something and be thrust into a soap opera of intrigue and romance in which she was the clear outsider.
This is not the case, though with T is for Trespass in which the crime is almost literally in Kinsey's back yard. Actually, it's an elderly neighbor Gus Vronsky that is at the heart of Kinsey's problems. When Vronsky falls and is injured, he requires home nursing care and Gus's niece hires Solana Rojas. The niece also hires Kinsey to do a cursory background check which turns up nothing.
Nonetheless, Kinsey begins to get her suspicions about Solana, which is appropriate as the nurse is not what she seems. In fact, she's not even Solana, but rather an identity thief who intends on taking Gus for all he is worth. It's not a fast process, however, which gives Kinsey time to build a case. Unfortunately, Solana is pretty clever also, and takes countermeasures to make Kinsey seem crazy.
Despite its variance from the series' norm, this is still quality work by Grafton. Sadly, there are only six letters left in the alphabet, but at Grafton's current pace, it'll probably take a decade to complete them. What's after that? As they say, only time will tell. In the meantime, T is for Trespass will satisfy Grafton's fans.
