With a personal as well as professional interest in the evolving sexual ethics of modern society, I found Mr Moore's latest book to be an excellent addition to the available publications covering alternative lifestyles, especially those involving two rapidly growing segments, polyamory and swinging. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr & Mrs Moore several years ago and found them to be honest, open and genuine. Their comfort in sharing their views about their open relationship, based on honesty, trust and unconditional love, transferred easily from our conversations to their two books, which provide insights to their swinging experiences and how they have personally learned and grown from them. Mr and Mrs Moore's relationship has actually become closer and more secure during their years participating in the Lifestyle.
Clearly, the rapid growth in interest and participation in both swinging and other polyamorous relationships should be viewed not as a societal aberration, but rather as an evolution. Even those staunch supporters of monogamy, whether based on religious or moral beliefs, cannot ignore the statistics that bear out the continued demise of monogamous relationships. Divorce rates have been on a continual climb for decades. Although difficult to quantify statistically, the rate that partners within so-called monogamous relationships have secret extramarital affairs is also alarmingly high and growing. The education for our community of Therapists and Psychologists needs to be updated to properly relect today's world. A well-known study by Knapp found that 33% of her sample of therapists believed that people who pursued a polyamorous lifestyle had personality disorders and neurotic tendencies, and another 20% suggested that such people might have antisocial personalities. It is noteworthy that Knapp also found that therapists considered people who were involved in secret extramarital affairs to be more 'normal' than those who communicated honestly with their partners about their participation in other relationships. It is obvious that these outmoded biases are finally succumbing to more open and positive viewpoints.
I found Mr Moore's latest book to be evolutionary in nature, not only covering a broader range of aspects related to swinging, but also showing the growth of the Moore's relationship subsequent to the publication of their first book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a non-clinical view of polyamory, swinging and other alternative lifestyles.
