Book Reviews of Suzanne's Diary for NicholasBook Review: The Unfolding of a Relationship Summary: 5 Stars
James Patterson is something of a phenomenon, where spine-tingling thrillers are concerned. He is a mystery writer, plus. The "plus" being there is always an eerie quality of otherworldliness to his work that leaves the reader a bit uneasy. Like the wobbly legs one has after a fast roller coaster ride. His works are so tremendously popular that anyone who has read one of his suspenseful novels has probably read all of the rest.
In "Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas", Patterson takes us from the roller coaster of suspense to the unfolding of a relationship that seems more like a stroll along a windswept beach. Instead of the shouts of the amusement park we hear the cries of the gulls and the pounding of the breakers. But we are still walking on a shoreline that is subject to the changes of the tide and the shifting of the sands.
On the very first page, the main character Katie Wilkinson asks the question that is every prayerful person's lament, "Oh Lord, Oh, Lord, are you anywhere, my Lord?" The question is prompted by Katie's receiving a compelling diary--a diary that transports her imagination, taking her from the mundane, workaday world of Manhattan to the quaint cottages of Martha's Vineyard. The diary leads Katie into the personal struggles of others. And the more she reads therein, the more she intertwines the insights of the diary into her own life.
Katie begins the diary in a time of confusion, loss and anger. Suzanne, the writer of the diary, becomes her guide toward, what? Understanding? Wisdom? More seeking? Suzanne tells the story of her own moment of epiphany and the wisdom she learns from it, what she calls the secret of the five balls--likening the aspects of every person's life to balls that one keeps juggling in the air. I will not divulge the secret, but rather, say that it holds insights that might be as helpful to you as they were to Suzanne and to Katie, especially if you are finding the "juggling act" of life a great challenge just now.
Suzanne follows the secret, and a result (assisted by a flat tire and a house that needs painting), Suzanne reconnects with the love of her life, falls in love, becomes engaged, is married and bears a child. Katie reads all of this in stages, and her reaction to each section of the diary is rendered in chapters interspersed between the chapters from the diary itself.
Summary of Suzanne's Diary for NicholasKatie Wilkinson has finally found the perfect man - but one day he suddenly disappears, leaving behind only a diary written by a new mother named Suzanne for her baby, Nicholas. In it she intimately reveals the romance between herself and the child's father, her hopes for their marriage, and her unparalleled joy in motherhood. As Katie reads on, she realizes that the man she loves is Suzanne's husband. Now, filled with terror and hope, Katie must struggle to understand what has happened - and find out if her new love has a prayer of surviving. Talk about a change of pace! Renowned suspense writer and Edgar Award winner James Patterson, author of such bestsellers-turned-blockbuster-movies as Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, exposes his sensitive side in his new novel, Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas. Katie Wilkinson's boyfriend Matt dumps her; not a total cad, he leaves her a gift, a diary kept by Suzanne, his first wife, for their son Nicholas. Though it's not exactly the diamond ring Katie was hoping for, she's unable to make herself destroy the diary--against her better judgment, Katie begins to read. Drawn against her will into the other woman's world, Katie learns of physician Suzanne's heart attack at age 35 and her decision to slow down, accomplished by a move to Martha's Vineyard and a new job as a simple country doctor. When love comes knocking, in the form of housepainter-cum-poet Matt Harrison, Suzanne is ready to listen to her newly repaired heart. Though painful for Katie, she begins to know and like Suzanne and her infant son Nicholas. Suzanne's devotion to Matt and their son shines through, as well as her plainspoken wisdom. While the journal helps Katie understand Matt, whether they can write a future together remains in question. --Alison Trinkle
