Book Review: Practical, a must reference.

This is one of those books that are an excellent complement to Method Books. There is very little theory here. Just example of grooves categorized by 7 mayor styles including Jazz, Blues, Rock, latin, etc. The grooves selected are really good and will widen your creativity and help you get the "timing feeling" which an important part when building solos that move well along the song. I know that most of us are preocupied with improvosing and soloing but you really need to understand and master comping styles to really stand out as an improviser. This book is fun and well done and will be the right tool for that.
I only wish it containg a little bit of theoty or explanation about the different measures used 4/4, 12/8/ 3/4, etc. and their relation to the timing and felling of the style. However I don't see that as a mayor draw back.

The goal of this book is to promote rhythmically and harmonically challenging phrases and licks in order to give you an authentic inside view on seven selected styles. Live or in a recording session, playing rhythm is the guitarist's main duty. This makes it even harder to understand why most guitarists' rhythm work (frankly) sounds rather unrehearsed and colorless. Especially since working with drum machines and samplers has become a vital part of musical performance, a good sense of rhythm, and some cool licks may just be your "key to success."Instruments & Performers Books
