Book Reviews of Supernatural: Nevermore

Book Review: An Opportunity SQUANDERED
Summary: 1 Stars

Media tie-in novels have such potential-- with a show like Supernatural, which only has a minuscule budget, tie-in writers have the chance to take the characters places the show never could, with bigger, badder villains, and truly ratcheted up tension, or complicated stories that couldn't fit within the 40minute tv framework. Alas, DeCandido not only delivers neither of those, he creates a truly boring book.

Frankly, this novel should be called Supernatural: Parking in NYC rather than Nevermore. DeCandido pays more attention to the landscape (and lack of parking) in the Bronx than he does to pacing his novel or building tension. He puts two plots into the novel, and yet neither one is particularly interesting. (One isn't supernatural at all.) He drops in random original characters who all apparently knew John Winchester, one of whom comes dangerously close to being a Mary Sue.

When writing about the Winchesters, he gets the details (mostly) right-- the dialogue is for the most part pithy and amusing, for example, and he shoehorns in far more backstory and detail from the show than necessary to his plot. His characterization of John (in absentia, via memory and conversation) is off, and his random additions to canon (Dean has hearing loss? What?) don't help his story and only serve to throw fans out of the world of the novel. DeCandido also seems to be an overzealous Sam!Girl, using multiple characters and situations within the book to make Dean look like an idiot. DeCandido has missed the *heart* of Supernatural, even while tossing in correct details from the first two seasons of the show.

But the biggest problem with the book has nothing to do with Supernatural. This book lacks any sense of urgency, of tension or pacing. There are pages of details about Fordham, about *coffee* and about friggin' *parking* which all bog down the already not-all-that-interesting story. Details crop up again and again, but then never play a part in the plot.

I don't know to whom to recommend this book. Supernatural fans will be incensed by the contradictions to canon (and can read better fiction by other fans for free on the internet.) Casual viewers of the show are better off picking up the DVDs of Supernatural and catching up on all 4 seasons. Non-viewers of Supernatural can definitely find a better mystery/horror novel than this one. (Oh, and academics definitely shouldn't read this book because the portrayal of same is insulting!)

Fans who want to read a media tie-in should read the second book (Jeff Mariotte's Witch's Canyon) instead.

Summary of Supernatural: Nevermore

Twenty-two years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. In the years after, their father, John, taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...and he taught them how to kill it.

Sam and Dean have hit New York City to check out a local rocker's haunted house. But before they can figure out why a lovesick banshee in an '80s heavy-metal T-shirt is wailing in the bedroom, a far more macabre crime catches their attention. Not far from the house, two university students were beaten to death by a strange assailant. A murder that's bizarre even by New York City standards, it's the latest in a line of killings that the brothers soon suspect are based on the creepy stories of legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe.

Their investigation leads them to the center of one of Poe's horror classics, face-to-face with their most terrifying foe yet. And if Sam and Dean don't rewrite the ending of this chilling tale, a grisly serial killer will end their lives forevermore.
