Book Review: Comment about breast feeding and jaundice
Summary: 5 Stars
This is an exceptional book although sometimes difficult to get your children to comply. I was reading the reviews and came across a review that referred spcifically to breastfeeding and jaundice. The paragraph in reference does not suggest that if a baby is jaundiced that a woman should stop breastfeeding. It suggests that if there is serious jaundice with high levels of bilirubin that the parents consult with the doctor because sometimes breast milk can slow the excretion of bilirubin by the liver. I am a nursery nurse for 18 years and it is extremely rare for a bilirubin level to be so high that in addition to medical treatment, a mother would have to avoid breast feeding. I think the information is accurate in suggesting that the pediatrician in charge of the baby's care be left to make a decision such as that one.
