Book Reviews of Superfoods: For Babies and Children

Book Review: Inspiring!
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't know about you, but peanut butter sandwiches meal after meal, with an occasional dose of macaroni and cheese, just doesn't float my boat. How do the kids stand it? And is there anything that we can do to get them out of the chicken nuggets rut?

Let me hear a chorus of a resounding "YES!"

Enter SuperFoods for Babies and Children, a cookbook that gives more than kid-friendly recipes--it gives hope, encouragement and direction. Annabel Karmel (with a last name like Karmel you know a cookbook has to be good) breaks her book into age-appropriate food selection and introduction and the recipes to make it happen.

By the time the children turn three, they have been introduced to a wide variety of foods that even tempt an adult pallet. As if this isn't enough, every page has a sidebar that gives nutritional information nuggets like: "Raspberries contain ellagic acid, which can help protect us against cancer," next to the recipe that will make our kids eat them. She also has a key that indicates whether a recipe can be frozen, or is suitable for vegetarian.

SuperFoods for Babies and Children inspired me to try just a little harder to get my family to eat better. She gives such good, realistic information and tempting meal ideas that even this mother, who has fought the food battle for years, is ready to go the rounds again. And you know what? Yesterday's trip to the store yielded a cartful of produce that the kiddos happily munched all afternoon. That gets my two thumbs up.

Armchair Interviews says: An inspiring and fun cookbook for all ages.

Book Review: Best baby food cookbook
Summary: 4 Stars

I researched a lot about making your own baby food and books on the subject. "Superfoods" by Annabel Karmel was my top choice.
The book is very well organized by age, it gives you sample meal planners, explains "superfoods" by colors and makes you confident you will feed your baby a well-balanced diet. I also love the fact it tells you which recipes can be frozen.
I compared it with the top book "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron; Karmel's book is a more concise, although to the point book. And it is a colorful and fun book to use everyday. "Super Baby Food" goes in too much detail; you'll find things such as growth charts. At this point I do not have time for such an extensive book. I wanted a book that would teach me how to cook healthy meals for my baby and "Superfoods" by Karmel was exactly what I needed.
In response to other reviews, I would say use your judgment and your pediatrician's recommendations on how/ when to start certain foods. Other reviews complain about how Karmel suggests a new solid food everyday of the first week, while pediatricians recommend one new solid food every 3 to 5 days. Well, use this book as a guide, not as a bible. And discuss with your pediatrician always. This book does have great recipes, it makes you confident you are feeding your baby properly and my baby absolutely loves her food.
The reason I did not give 5 stars is because I purchased "Top 100 Baby Purees" by Annabel Karmel believing I'd have different recipes and there are some different recipes, but too many recipes are repeated in each book. So I'd recommend buying only one.

Book Review: Good Ideas, Questionable content
Summary: 4 Stars

First the good: It's a good starter book for ideas..It didn't occur to me to saute chicken with onions, celery and garlic then puree for my son...so this is more than just a "puree peaches, then serve" kind of book. There is some of that but also actual dishes I would prepare for myself. I also REALLY liked that each recipe indicated if the food was suitable for freezing--important to me for the convenience.

Then the bad: Many of the recipes include foods that are HIGHLY allergenic-strawberries, peanuts/peanut butter, wheat. SHe does mention that these are allergenic but in the back AFTER the nutrition introduction and recipies, a place where it could be easily missed.

Book Review: Nice variety
Summary: 3 Stars

This book provides an interesting selection of meals for your baby. I've purchased it originally to cook first purees for my newborn, and still waiting until she's old enough to eat solids. However, the book also provides recipes for toddlers and older children, and I haven't found a recipe that I could imagine my 2-year-old eat. He's very picky and simpler meal recipes would do us more good. I'd look for something else if I would purchase a cookbook for babies and children.

Book Review: Good Recipes, but for Toddlers
Summary: 3 Stars

I like the recipes in this book, and look forward to making them for my 11-month-old when she's a little older. I was disappointed that the author doesn't seem to recognize that some foods are inappropriate for babies, such as corn, shellfish, and peanut butter. I've chosen and then had to discard several recipes after doing further on-line research on the ingredients. As a new(ish) mom, I don't have extra time as it is!
