Book Reviews of Superfoods: For Babies and ChildrenBook Review: Love This Book Summary: 5 Stars
I am a first time mom and began feeding my baby girl rice cereal when she was about 2 1/2 months old. After she was good with cereal, I began to move on to other solid 'store bought' baby food (applesauce, peas, etc) but, I never really liked the idea of not knowing exactly how a jar of baby food could last on the shelf for several years. I had toyed with the idea of making my baby food at home but thought I lacked the time and tools to do so. Boy was I wrong.
I have been using this book for about 2 months now. I am in love with the recipes, ideas, and nutrition information provided within it's pages. This book provides great ideas on how to get started with making your own baby food, and the recipes are easy to follow with simple ingredients. The author gives you a list of suggested kitchen tools you may need or will find helpful while preparing the food (some basics are a baby food mill or electric food mixer, a few pots and pans, serving bowls, and baby spoons) I find it easiest with a food processor as I double or sometimes even triple the recipes and freeze the extra servings. This makes it less time consuming as I do all of the baby food cooking on one day for an entire month or two. The colorful pages and illustrations give you a good idea on how things should turn out. I love cookbooks with color pictures as it lets you know if you are cooking the meals properly. I have worked my way through the 6-9 month section, and I am now working on the 9-12 month section. I also enjoy knowing exactly what my little one is getting in each meal (i.e. no preservatives or other additives to 'maintain color' or 'keep freshness').
So far, my little girl has no complaints. She has eaten every meal I have cooked out of this book, and she eats them heartily.
Note: this author is from England and some of her explanations, ingredients, tools, etc are in British lingo. If you don't know what she is talking about, just do a quick search on the internet to find out what she is talking about. You will find that you know exactly what the item is; they just have a different word for it in England.
I would highly recommend this book to any new and/or seasoned baby food maker.
Book Review: More than just recipes! Everything you need for starting your child on the road to healthy eating! Summary: 5 Stars
If you have a baby or young child, you may already know that it is not always easy to feed them healthy or nutritious meals. Sometimes it's not all that easy to plan them either. Your child might be a picky eater, or you might be in need of some healthy recipes to make mealtime fun for your family. If you want to give your child a great start in life, the best way is to provide them with a balance of healthy foods. But where do parents begin to look?
One such place is in the book, "SuperFoods for Babies and Children," by Annabel Karmel. What an excellent resource! Here are just a few of the wonderful treasures we found in this informative book:
* Detailed, healthy recipes for main meals and desserts, categorized by age;
*Sample meal planners, categorized by age;
*Numerous food tips and the importance of a variety of each of the foods in our everyday diet;
*What foods you should avoid giving your baby;
*How to shop for healthy foods;
*Much information on eating "superfoods" by colors and how you can give your child the best start in life by eating a well-balanced diet.
This book also has a section that discusses food allergies and lists foods to cure common ailments.
The steps are clearly detailed beginning at 6 months of age -- what foods you should begin introducing to your child...how to know if they are ready for solids...how to make baby food...and sample meal planners for the first 4 weeks of first solid foods. There are large colorful photographs of meals, and cute vegetable and fruit illustrations throughout the book. Short "Did you know?" facts and other side bar tips give you a quick look at important food information and how those foods can benefit our bodies.
MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book -- informative content, clear appetizing food photos, and an abundance of ideas, make this book a winner! But be warned -- you might have some real fun creating these meals, and your child may beg you to make more healthy meals for them!
Book Review: Great book for many reasons Summary: 5 Stars
There are many things that I love about this book. First, I appreciate the straightforward information on nutrition; in the margins next to recipes she adds quick info on certain ingredients such as "this fruit has fats that are good for you (speaking of avocados)," or "this vegetable has great antioxidants." She presents information in a stepwise process; as in, after you introduce these first tastes, try these other fruits/veggies that are not as easy to accept such as zucchini and cauliflower. There are no-cook recipes as well as recipes with the option of steaming versus boiling the fruits/veggies first. My favorite no-cook recipe is bananas and avocados pureed together which has a mild sweet flavor and neither fruit is cooked so that the nutrients stay intact. There are a great number of recipes with beautiful photos, a must for any cookbook. I have only tried the purees so far because my baby is only 7 months old. He does not love everything that I make but he loves many of the recipes so I am satisfied. And there are such a great variety with fruit mix purees, vegetables mix purees, chicken and fruit/veggie purees, beef and veggies, lamb casserole, etc. I do not anticipate that I will go through the trouble to make funny animal shapes with the foods when my baby is bigger and able to appreciate it, but I think this book will still be useful for the basic pasta sauces and other "basic" recipes that it presents. Some recipes are time consuming, but I spend an average of 3 hours every 2 weeks to make 2 weeks worth of baby food (this includes clean-up time). Overall, a worthwhile endeavor because the foods you make will be so much healthier and fresher than the babyfoods you buy which are made to have a shelf life of YEARS. I have her other book "Top 100 purees" which is also a good book though not as complete as this one.
Book Review: Excellent Cookbook! Summary: 5 Stars
This book has excellent recipes. I have not used much of it yet because it is more appropriate for toddlers. My baby is still 10 months old. What is excellent about this book is that the recipes can be made for the entire family. The recipes are excellent tasting! I have Anabelle's other book and several of the recipes in that book are included in this book. That is the only thing I did not like about purchasing both books. The baby purees are the same in both books. I think I could have just purchased this one since it has recipes from first foods to toddler foods.
You will not regret purchasing this book. Recipes are easy to make and freeze well. Your entire family will enjoy these delicious meals. I only wish I had purchased this sooner so my baby would have eaten this from the beginning. Initially she did not want to eat the meals because she was not used to so much flavor. But it only took a few tries and now she loves all meals I make her. My suggestion is to make the vegetable or chicken broth to use in the recipes. The broth will keep well in the refrigerator for a week. The meals come out tasting much better with the broth.
Also make sure you use a good food processor when making the purees. It will certainly make an enormous difference in the food textures.
You will love this book and your baby will too:o)
Book Review: Simple and Enjoyable Solution Summary: 5 Stars
'Superfoods for Babies and Children' is a life-saver in my quest for quick, simple, and tasty recipes that our son would enjoy eating. Thank you, Annabel!
I love to cook (and eat), but was having a hard time cooking meals that our picky 2-year-old son would enjoy. He literally, used to run the opposite direction, whenever I would offer him food; and, almost stopped eating because he was tired of plain vegetables, fruits, mac 'n cheese, hot dogs, cereal, and of course, pizza 3 days in a row.
The recipes are about one paragraph only, can't get easier than that. So easy that I look forward to preparing our son's meals, knowing that he is going to eat healthy and have a variety. In time, when he is ready, and out of the picky-eating stage, I hope that this transition will help him to enjoy Mommy and Daddy's foods too.
I've just ordered two more books and hope that the 'Lunchbox' and 'Family' editions are just as wonderful.
