Book Review: Easy to digest information

I am a big proponent of foods as medicine. There are so many complex combinations of ingredients within each food that science still does not understand, that I feel it is much better to consume a whole food than to pop a pill that has an extract of some of the good ingredients from that food. For example, it was once thought the bioflavonoids, such as those found in the white stringy stuff in citrus, were useless, and now science has found that they help your body absorb certain nutrients in the foods that have them. Another example: We were all warned for a long time not to avoid tea, and now it is found that tea is quite healthful.

This is why I highly recommend this book. The main focus of this book is to describe 14 "super foods" that have combinations of ingredients that are thought to be healthful and even potentially healing. Even better, the authors very cleverly combined foods into groups (one super food plus its "sidekicks"--acceptable substitutes), so in fact they cover far more than 14 foods, but in such as way that it is much easier to remember what types of foods to eat.

For example, there is a chapter on blueberries as a super food, but when you read that chapter, you find that all other manner of berry can be used for very similar results as well. But it is much easier to remember to eat 1 to 2 cups of any kind of berry a day than to try to figure out whether you should eat 1/2 cup of cranberries plus 1/2 cup of strawberries plus 1 cup of blueberries--you get the picture.

And lest you feel that there is too much information to absorb, the authors provide a very abbreviated one-page summary that you could photocopy and put on your refrigerator. (Or, you could create your own table, like I did, of all the foods and their sidekicks, arranged by food type, with recommended servings per day as well as serving sizes. Very tidy and yes, it is magneted to my refrigerator.)

If you only get one book on foods that are good for you, check this one out.
