Book Reviews of Super Baby FoodBook Review: You CAN feed your baby a healthy diet and work full time! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book because it tells me exactly how to feed my baby "from scratch". I know many reviewers thought there was too much detail in the book, but I LIKE that aspect of it. I'll never need another book about baby food. My baby started out with her first solids using Ruth Yaron's plan and she's healthy and glowing with all the good foods we feed her.Several reviews talk about extra chapters detracting from the "food" aspect of the book. I have found those extra chapters to be very helpful. The advice about arts and crafts and how to save money on those expensive supplies is very sensible. I love the ideas about birthday parties and other kid activities. The book is more comprehensive than the title indicates. Ms. Yaron really makes it easy to prepare the foods, buy the ingredients, and stock up the freezer in advance, so that the actual feeding time is stress-free. I know some reviewers complained that the ingredients are too hard to find. I live in Beirut, Lebanon, and even here I can find EVERYTHING I need. Some reviewers complained that the book was too "pro-vegetarian" or that some foods aren't introduced at the right time. This didn't bother me because I'm planning on limited red meat anyway, and I use my doctor's recommendations along with this guide. She said OK to citrus at 8 months, and OK to flaxseed, too. As with any book about your baby, you have to go with your own instincts and what feels right. What feels right to me (and to the majority of others, it seems from the reviews here) is that this book is a mother's all-in-one guide to healthy eating for years and years.
Book Review: I wish I cared this much about my own health! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book after a friend recommended it to me and I'm hooked. I read it nonstop (when by 7-month-old was sleeping) over a few weeks. I agree that reading it in sections is good (which the author advises at the beginning of the 2nd edition, by the way). For those who are afraid of some of nature's foods (seeds and legumes, etc.), listen to all of the diets and research out there for adults right now. My mom is on the "Best Life Diet" Oprah is pushing right now and it gives a lot of the same nutrition advice to adults trying to not only lose weight, but treat their bodies better (preventing risk of heart disease, Type II diabetes, stroke, and cancer). I've saved serious money (especially when buying whole grains) and my son loves the food. I never would have given my son avocado without having read this book and it's his favorite food right now (filled with all of the nutrients my pre-natal vitamin is putting in me and my breastmilk too). I think all books should be taken with a grain of salt - of course there are things that my pediatrician recommends holding off on (like eggs and nuts), but getting my son to eat "super veggies" and yogurt at a young age can only increase his chances of being a healthy eater later in life.
I agree with the other readers who say it is an easy reference guide too. I'm not an expert cook by any means and it gives so much detail as to how to prepare and store the food properly; it's very helpful and easy to find what I need quickly. I "Post-it note" the pages I need regularly and it's out on the countertop constantly.
Book Review: Wonderful reference, chock full of info and tips Summary: 5 Stars
I read some other reviewers' notes who felt that some of the information may be inaccurate. My question is, are you going to use just ONE resource to research your baby's food, especially if you're considering making your own? On the concerning issues (such as the use of nuts in baby's diet), consult various resources and people. Besides, the author emphasizes clearing these things with your pediatrician and defers to her when there are questions.
Otherwise, I think you will find this book is a real gem. Her whole philosophy and approach to feeding your babies (ages 0 to adult!) is very natural and nutritious. She is also obviously a vegetarian and quite environmentally-conscious, based on her cooking methods and countless time-, energy-, and money-saving tips. This was much appreciated. I have been using many of her methods for feeding my baby and my whole family.
I recommend this book to any new or veteran parent who wishes to feed his or her baby well. And I recommend many of the cooking methods and health food ideas to my friends and family for their own adult food prep.
I liked one reviewer's comment about using the information you need and leaving what may not be possible/relevant to you right now. If you don't have time to make your own yogurt, that's understandable, but you may find that you are able to make most of the recipes quite quickly and way more economically!
In short, I HIGHLY recommend this book. And at that price for such a comprehensive resource, how can you go wrong?!
Book Review: One of the best investments in your child Summary: 5 Stars
This book's incredible. I'm convinced it's one of the best investments you'll make in your child's long-term health and sound eating habits. Our 9-month-old son is flourishing on the diet espoused in this book, which is nearly encyclopedic. In other words, it takes some time to work your way through the salient chapters before you get your bearings and can begin preparing your baby's food in earnest. But I found that okay. For me, the food is easy, quick, and economical to prepare and for baby, very nutritious. A definite win-win. I'm hoping that our son will continue to enjoy the variety of foods he's currently eating, such as brown rice, millet, oats, adjuki and kidney beans, egg yolk, tofu, yogurt, broccoli, green beans, peas, sweet potato, avocado (and more veggies), peaches, pears, apples, banana, mango, papaya, kiwi (and more fruits), sprouted barley bread, a variety of cheeses, and ground pumpkin seeds. (The book is largely vegetarian-based, but does include a chapter on poultry/meats, too.) I hear so much about toddlers who are picky eaters and am hoping that with the great food foundation we've created, our son will remain open to his existing repetoire of foods as well as new ones. (My husband and I both love to cook and are very adventurous eaters, so hopefully this will rub off on our son.) _Super Baby Food_ also includes quick and easy "recipes" for making your own econonical and less toxic household cleansers (ex: 50/50 solution of Borax and baking soda for dishwasher detergent) and other little goodies, too. Simply, buy it.
Book Review: I highly recommended this book for all new parents. Summary: 5 Stars
This book has helped clear up my confusion when starting to feed my son solids. It not only tells you what and when to introduce certain foods, but how much and what consistancy. It also gives sample menu plans and step-by-step instuctions on how to prepare homemade foods for your baby. It also tells you what not to feed your baby and why as well. It has a strong nutritional background so you can understand why some foods are better than some. I refer to it daily to find out information about vegetables and fruit. There is also a section on homemade household things and fun projects for your children. A recipe index is located in the back on foods that not just your baby will love but your whole family as well. Not only does the author recommend that you go over with your Dr. the menus so he/she can add or omit foods taking your baby into consideration but she also welcomes any comments or questions to her email which gets answered daily. It takes out the feelings of being alone in the whole crusade. This book is enthusiasticly written and the author's personality stands out when reading. It's a friendly book and enjoyable to read. For those parents that are super busy, there are suggestions in the begining of the book on how to read the book so you can get the most out of it in the least amount of time. Reading this book has given me peace of mind that I am feeding my son the best way I can. I have been recommending this book to friends and family and will continue to do so.
