Book Reviews of Super Baby FoodBook Review: Here's how to tell if you'd like the book: Summary: 5 Stars
I am shocked at all of the poor reviews this book was given, and I hope they don't turn people away from a book that I really appreciated. When I first opened the book, I read instructions on how to prepare and store almost every fruit or vegetable you can imagine (what a great resource!), but also saw things like grinding your own millet for cereal, making your own yogurt, adding kelp for nutrients and I thought, boy am I in for a long read! But what I thought would be terribly complex wasn't complex at all. Her directions are very simple and easy, and I felt she always kept the idea of less time and less money is best. I was consistently surprised how easy it was to put my baby on a wonderfully healthy diet, and it gave me such a sense of pride to do this for my daughter. Still wondering if its for you? This is for mothers who want to make their own food, but is also aware of the extreme importance of nutrition. Friends of mine who had and had not made their own baby food would gasp at the time and energy they thought I put into my baby's food, without realizing that it wasn't very time-consuming at all and was very rewarding. If these are your thoughts, stay away from this book. If you aren't willing to really read and learn about nutrition, stay away from this book. If you roll your eyes at "tree-huggers" and think organic farming is nonsense, you may not want to buy this book either because there is touch of this attitude. . She never sounded "preachy" to me, she just sounded well-educated, however I personally have strong views on human nutrition and how we treat our bodies AND communities by the food we consume. Also: Im pretty sure that the comments about the nuts and nitrates in carrots and spinach ARE mentioned in the book. I think some people read only some parts and were ready to ring the alarm bells. If you read further, there are warnings for issues such as those. On a final note: After I bought mine, it came with me EVERYWHERE so I could read a few chapters whenever I got a chance. I bought it for a friend and I laughed because she was carrying it with her in the diaper bag. For those of us who loved the book, we know it's worthwhile. I recommend checking the book out from the library first, and then buying a copy if it seems like something you would really like.
Book Review: One book so many benefits!! Summary: 5 Stars
I, like so many moms, was on the path to boxed baby cereals and Gerber jars when my 4 month old got extremely constipated and irritable with her 1st rice cereal experience. My pediatrician advised me to wait a couple of weeks and resume rice cereal. It was so hard to wait because my child was hungry and she had proven she could eat quite well! The same thing happened with the 2nd try of rice cereal - constipation, screaming and writhing in pain. Here I had this hungry, eager little eater and the traditional American baby foods just weren't working.
I ordered Super Baby Food from Amazon, and all my troubles went away in an instant. My life and and my daughter's diet suddenly involved mashed fresh bananas and water, mashed fresh avocados and water, pureed sweet pototoes, mangos and more. All fresh, all with good anti-viral properties, all helping me contribute to the extent that I can to helping my daughter develop and maintain a healthy immune system.
Today, my daughter is a 2-1/2 year old who is an amazing eater. She eats a wide variety of fresh fruits and veggies everyday including eating fresh steamed green beans the way other kids eat french fries. She devours fresh steamed broccoli, eats pesto packed pork chops, and just yesterday she downed a cold salad of black-eyed peas, green olives and tomatoes. My friends, neighbors, and even I am amazed as she eagerly tries any food I put in front of her.
I attribute her eating habits largely to her Super Baby Food diet where never once did I put something in front of her that I would not eat myself. I believe by feeding her stuff that tasted really good, she came to develop a trust that whatever food I give her, chances are she's going to like it.
I'm a huge proponent of this book, the diet espoused and the fact that by cooking & preparing healthy foods for your child when he/she is an infant you'll develop a great habit of cooking healthy as a mom that will last a life time.
I highly recommend this book to any new mom. One last unexpected benefit from the book - my husband and I eat a much wider variety of fresh fruits and veggies now too. We all have benefited from this book!!
Book Review: A Super(b) Baby Food book Summary: 5 Stars
The title says it all: It is a 'Super(b) Baby Food' book! There is so much you can do so wrong and so much you can do so right - this book explains EVERYTHING to the point of paranoia that only a parent can assume about their baby. She doesn't just make it look easy - it IS easy, written without assuming that you know too much or too little; and written with love, from a mother to other mothers and fathers. It is a must for any new parents library, to pass down the generations, because you can't fall behind with the author's on-line, hands-on support through the internet, that gives you constant updates and newsbreaks as far as the contents of the book are concerned. And the best part? It's not 600 pages on food, food, and food. It is loaded with hundreds of economizing tips & notes. (No matter if it is mentioned on page #67, she repeats it briefly wherever and how ever many times it is necessary, so you can't go wrong.) There are chapters on how to throw a party that won't rob the bank and holiday arts and crafts - just to keep them busy on those there's-nothing-to-do days. Then there's another part which concisely tells you all you need to know including nutritional value, how-to-buy guide, preparation using various cooking methods, storage, freezing and expiry of specific fruits and veggies, aside from other homemade products for baby, mommy and daddy and your baby's domain - the home. Two chapters are devoted solely to nutrition and nutrient breakdowns of foods, and IT'S NOT BORING! But the best is last - that wonderful nutrition bursting diet she has put together. You end up giving your baby such a variety of foods that gives little taste buds a run for THEIR money and not yours. By the time baby is a year old, it is close to being a connoisseur and it's all healthy! And when you have a toddler in hand, her recipes for shop-bought snacks are sooo easy to do yourself, and you pay for the food - not the packaging! Feeding your baby the right food is as important as the loving cuddles that feed the parent-child relationship. This is the undertone of this book. Need I say more?
Book Review: Super Baby Food Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent resource for new parents on how, what and when to feed their baby solid food. Especially wonderful because the author explains the healthiest way to prepare your own baby food using pesticide free produce and making home made porridge. my baby and i especially like the porridge as it has kept my baby soooo healthy .No diarhea, gas or constipation. you can mix anything into the porridge. i also enjoyed all the info on buying , storing , and preparing fruits and veggies. in the beginning she gives you step by step instructions on when to introduce new foods plus healthy extras to add in the food to make them more nutritious. All the recipes are SIMPLE and can be made in advance. There is no excuse your baby should not be eating this healthy way. i work full time and have no problem finding the time. i am a Women's health Nurse Practitioner and have seen first hand soooo many babies with illnesses that could have been prevented by using this diet as a guideline. Just using the porridge and healthy extras can do the trick. And the best part of all is my 16 mos old has never been sick. No ear infections, no bowel problems, no lung infections NOTHING. his growth has been amazing. he is so well adjusted, curious, sleeps well. Poops 3 times a day and it isn't sticky like many babies bowel movements can be. I just saw my Pediatrician 2 weeks ago and she could not get over how HEALTHY my baby is. She was amazed and was going to buy the book that day. Buy the book and use as much of the info as you feel comfortable using. ie. i still feed my baby meat and he still eats some store bought items, but the addition of the porridge and healthy extras really makes the difference for us. Healthy eating and good nutrition as it relates to a good immune system is not a new concept. i just feel many Americans are to lazy to investigate and change their habits. Please give this book a chance to give your baby an excellent start in life let alone the stress reduction you will feel from not having the average baby who gets sick 6-12 times a year.
Book Review: Great book - A must for working or stay at home Moms! Summary: 5 Stars
My son is almost 11 months old and this book has become very valuable to me. This book has taught me so much and is perfect for introducing solids to babies. I have even cleaned up my diet as a result! I was shocked to read some of the negative reviews on Amazon about this book. I can tell you that I have read those reviews and those reviewers simply did NOT read the book very carefully. They make it sound like all Ruth Yaron recommends is nuts and nitrate infested carrots. First of all she DOES address the nitrates in carrots as well as the peanut allergy issues. She cross references the "Your Baby's First Year", which is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. If those reviewers had cared to actually read the book, they would know that! What the book does emphasize is the following:
IT IS EASIER TO MAKE YOUR OWN FOOD THAN TO BUY THE JAR STUFF!!!
By making your own food, you can really offer your baby so much more than any jar food has to offer. By making it myself, I really feel good about what I am giving my son. The basis of the super baby food diet is the super porridge made out of whole grains and after a certain age, legumes. My son LOVES his super porridge! The next top items are yogurt, fresh fruit, and vegetables. I always wondered why I hated vegetables growing up and it is because of the way they were prepared. I buy only fresh vegetables now and I steam cook everything. This really helps keep the flavor and the nutrients! I have not conducted any scientific study as Ruth Yaron has not, but I can tell you that my kid is very healthy. I have no choice but to work and he has to go to Day Care. There is always someone sick at Day Care, but rarely is it ever my son and I really believe that his diet contributes largely to that.
If you buy the book and are overwhelmed, just remember this: You do not have to read the whole book in 2 days. Just take it one chapter at a time!
