Book Reviews of Struwwelpeter in English Translation (Dover Children's Classics)Book Review: Struwwelpeter in English Summary: 5 Stars
Was surprised to learn the book had been translated into English. My wife is from Austria and has had a German print for years. When some friends indicated they'd like to have a copy, we went to Amazon and, lo and behold, there it was, and in English, too!!! It made three people happy.
The English version also has the German translation as well as the book's history dating back to the mid-1800's. Thanks, Amazon!
Book Review: I was read the German version of this as a child and am so glad to be able to read it in English to my daughter. Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent. The pictures are identical to the original and the text is translated beautifully. Now, the stories may be a bit harsh for some folks and it does lack a little political correctness, it was written in the 1840's after all. The lessons are sound though. They sure scared me into behaving when I was a child. This paperback is also considered to be a "Green Edition" printed on recycled paper, that was a nice surprise for me.
Book Review: A children's book unlike any other Summary: 5 Stars
I was raised on this book, given to me by a favorite aunt who was raised in Austria. The stories and drawings are simultaneously grim and clever, with lessons for children that have not been sugarcoated in the least. The book was originally written in German and one English version (not this one) was translated by Mark Twain. This book has lasted 150 years with good reason.
Book Review: A real gem Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this book since I was a little kid. My mom used to say that American parents were too sensitive and would be scared of this book, but it was all in good fun. the lessons are good and it is more of a look back into another era of parenting. I am buying it today for a friend who has just had a baby, hopefully she will take it with a grain of salt.
Book Review: Another Blast form the Past Summary: 5 Stars
This is another book I loved as a child. I Liked it so much because it was different. I had forgotten about it until I saw show on TV about the Tiger Lilies. I glad the book is still in print. I remember it used to scare me to death whenever I read this book, now I find it so funny.I hope it scares my grandchildren into being good kids.
