Book Reviews of Struwwelpeter in English Translation (Dover Children's Classics)Book Review: Struwwelpeter Tales Summary: 5 Stars
Keep in mind this is not a modern publication. It was written in Germany in the mid 1800's. Remember, different culture, different time, different sense propriety and certainly a different sense of humor. It is a set of cautionary tales (if you're not good......). In my opinion most younger children will see the stories and the illustrations as grotesque - but it depends on the personality of the child. Having said that, somewhere around Middle School age, children often develop a gruesome sense of humor. They "get" the over-the-top, unrealistic touch stories like these project. Remember those cards with the Garbage Pail Kids? The Struwwelpeter fits into the same genre. They love the twisted humor and absolutely revel in the shock value that's produced. My own children and I laughed ourselves silly reading these. Take a look inside the book and see what you think.
Book Review: Lies My Parents Told Me Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I were discussing our future probable children this evening, and the topic of lying to kids came up. I'm all for it. Kids heads are supposed to be filled with lies and nonsense, as far as I'm concerned. My wife, on the other hand, is an elementary school librarian, and has other ideas. Sure, she's down with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and telling children that if they sit too close to the TV that their eyeballs will fall out- but the great red legged scissor man? Not so much.
If, like me, you feel it is important to tell children that their "face may stick like that!" or that children in Ethiopia will starve to death if they don't finish their vegetables, or that stepping on the crack will put their mother in a wheel chair for the rest of her life- well, this book is for you!
Book Review: Required reading for all kids! Summary: 5 Stars
Every kid should read this book! My German grandmother read my sister and I this book. We used to make fun of my sister because she was 'der Daumensauger' - the thumb sucker!
This book goes through the dangerous things kids do...and their consequences. Another reviewer talked about the TV commericials and how it makes it OK for kids to spill and break things. I completely agree. Kids today get away with everything. They weren't coddled in 1845 the way they were today.
This book is truthful. If you play with matches, you will get hurt. If you don't watch where you are going, you will fall. Duh. It doesn't shield kids from the real world.
I'm a teacher...perhaps I should read this book to my class and let them know what it COULD be like! (j/k)
Book Review: Family Tradition Summary: 5 Stars
My German Grandmother used to read this book to us kids (in her own version) because she had the german version. So she translated it to us. It was our favorite because she used to make high pitched kitty voices for the tale of the match girl. I will never EVER forget it. I have bought it for 2 of my four cousins...for their baby showers! lol I have one too, I am having this book shipped to my cousin, so I cannot tell if this one is translated by mark twain or not. But I do know the one translated by Mark Twain is awesome. When I was in high school I brought it in to speech class and read it allowed in a christian private school. It was the talk of the class, debates stirred about this book but we ALL enjoyed the book too. This is a great buy!
Book Review: Gesundheit! Summary: 5 Stars
My little sister and I were born in Germany (1950,1952), & our older sister learned German fluently. Mom brought this wonderful book (written in German) back from Germany and hid it in her closet, but we found it and frequently "read" it with great enjoyment, thrilled by the gruesome pictures of what happens to naughty little children who don't do as they ought. When Mom caught us she always scolded us. Over the years the book disappeared. We once reminisced, wondering what happened to this eccentric book, a link in our happy past. When I found it on the internet listed under German children's books, I bought several copies and passed them out - to everyone's delight & amazement.
