Book Review: OMG you have to taste this!!!!

Chef Mike Baruch's "Street Food Chicago" is a food lover's compilation of home town recipes from one of the truly most diverse enthnic places in the country, Chicago. Although I'm not a Chicagoan, the stories (love the stories!) in this book and the recipes from every nation almost converted me from a Steelers fan to a Bears fan....ok not quite!!!! But seriously, I want to eat every page of this book.
I immediately tried the recipes for King Chicken Vesuvio and Chicago Style Italian Beef and knocked the socks off my family! There are chapters honoring the traditional street food from every cultural section of the city. And the book is laced with fun stories combining historical facts with just plain old stuff heard on the streets. There are even directions on how to eat some of the meals. I never thought that would be necessary until I discovered what it means to eat an Italian Beef wet.
When I was a kid, our town held "Nationality Days" for one weekend each May. The street was blocked and booths set up for every nationality imaginable, usually sponsored by one of the hundreds of churches in our little town of Ambridge. We actually held the record for the most churches and bars per capita of any other town in America - interesting combination, but if you ever knew anyone who worked in one of our steel mills, you'd understand. I digress. Street Food Chicago reminds me of our Nationality Days and I look forward to visiting every culture by eating one chapter at a time.
