Book Review: My seven-year-old loved it

When I listened to the first chapter of this cd with my son, I was worried that it would be too boring for him. I was delighted to find that he loved it and listened to one cd a night for seven nights. He even went to be early so that he could have time to listen to an entire cd. They are all slightly over an hour long. He finished the last cd today while cleaning up his room and kept running out to tell me things like "E Pluribus Unum" (sp?) means "one from many" and different factoids about the Roman Empire.
We are not a religious family, but I found none of the Christian elements to be offensive at all. It is harder to distinguish the included bible stories (of which there area couple) from the historical stories than it is in the written book because there is no indication - in the book, these are outlines with a darker line. If this is a problem for you, I recommend getting the book to go along with the cd and then pay attention to the chapters so that it can be a point of discussion.
I found this series on CD to provide us with an opportunity for something that Mortimer Adler (a great reader of classic works) recommends - he says that the first time you read something challenging, you should go straight through without stopping to analyze so that you get the whole "story" of the work. Only after that should you go back and re-read more critically, taking the time to look things up and understand it on a deeper level. I think that these cds are helping my son get excited and understand the "story" of history. Later, we will go back and listen or read again and spend more time with it. At the moment, the idea is to ignite a passion for history and so far it seems to be working. He's listening to the first cd in volume 2 as I write this!
