Book Reviews of Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1)Book Review: Grabs you from the start Summary: 5 Stars
Unlike the person who reviewed the book just before me, I understand the difference between fantasy and reality. Mr. Butcher makes up categories of werewolves...and that would be wrong because what ? You think there ARE werewolves and we should get their classifications straight ? Good grief, whatever will you do when you discover the Easter Bunny isn't bringing you a basket of goodies next Spring ? The author is writing a witty and urbane urban fantasy and it is a screaming fine ride. The characters are totally engaging, the plot made me chew up the pages so fast that I had to read it a second time to savor it all. I finished all the rest of the books that have been published in this series ( so far) in under 3 weeks, then got the audio books of the first three. I don't listen to books on CD very often but these were done by an outstanding actor and he not only makes a good Harry Dresden, he darn well excels at bringing all the characters to life. So Bravo Jim Butcher and Bravo James Marsters. Hurry up and bring us more of the works of Harry Dresden.
Book Review: Up all day. Summary: 5 Stars
I don't really have anything to say that everyone else hasn't already said.
Storm Front is an excellent book. It's been several months since any book has managed to grab my attention so strongly and hold me captured within it's pages for an entire day.
I suppose overly critical people might find problems with it, but overall, I've rarely had a more fun experience with a book.
I found quite a few moments to laugh at. Bob. The circumstances of the date.
It was also nice to see that the book wasn't totally light on the magic. Sometimes you pick up a book where someone is supposedly a wizard and you see them do one magical thing and that's it. In an entire book. No. Thank. You. Storm Front isn't like that.
If you enjoy detective novels with a wizardly twist, read this book.
One small word of caution, there is at least one scene of moderate sexuality and several scenes of murder. This probably isn't a book you want to give to anyone under 16 at least.
Book Review: Buy the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been a science fiction/fantasy fan for over 25 years, so I hope you take me seriously when I say that the entire Harry Dresden series is fabulous. High fantasy like LOTR this is not, but Butcher writes books in which the dialogue is laugh-out-loud-witty and the plot is can't-put-it-down action-packed and tension filled. The Dresden series is based in the "real world" (modern day Chicago). Storm Front sets the stage for the rest of the series by explaining magic and magicians like Harry (our self-deprecating, disheveled, tongue-in-cheek, can't pay the rent private investigator and hero). Each book in the series is a fantasy mystery (Storm Front is a magical "who-dun-it" murder mystery) with great action and character development. Storm Front is a wonderful book, and the rest of the series is even better. If you like Charlaine Harris' "Dead.." series, Laurell Hamilton's Obsidian Butterfly, or the Simon R. Green "Deathstalker" series, you will enjoy this book and the rest of the Dresden Files.
Book Review: Great First Book Summary: 5 Stars
Jim Butcher has created a very refreshing character in his Dresden Series. Harry Dresden felt like such a real character to me and it was really refreshing. What I mean by real is that he had flaws that gave him a unique personality that seemed far from the norms of the usual hero. Add a fun/real character with a very unique and original story an Storm Front made for a very enjoyable read. This book was very easy to read and by easy I mean I had no problem sitting down and reading 50+ pages at a time and still wanting more when I put the book down. The story is not overly deep (but there is a lot of potential to flush out Dresden in future books) but it just flowed so well together that I read the entire book in only 3 sittings. The action is well written and plentiful and the "universe" that Butcher has created is very imaginative and just flat out fun to read. I will definitely be picking up the next in the series and am very excited to read more about this world Butcher has created full of vampires, wizards, demons, and much more.
Book Review: Great mix of mystery and fantasy Summary: 5 Stars
I was searching for some good supernatural books a few weeks ago when I ran into Storm Front. The plot sounded interesting and many reviewers had compared this book to Harry Potter, so I took a chance and bought it. This turned out to be a wise move because I was not dissapointed with Storm Front at all. If you're a fan of Harry Potter but are looking for something a little more grown up, you should definitely check out the Dresden Files. They're full of believeable characters, mystery, suspense, and humor. This book starts off with Harry Dresden, the only wizard in the Chicago phone book, being down on his luck; he hasn't had any real work in weeks and is getting behind on his rent. Harry soon gets a call from the Chicago P.D. about a gruesome double murder committed with black magic and he goes to investigate. I won't give away too much, but Harry does end up having a pretty crazy week. If you're a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, or just fantasy in general I'm sure you'll love this book just like I did.
