Book Reviews of Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1)

Book Review: Wizard For Hire
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this series. The premise is wonderful, and while Jim Butcher may be new to writing, he has done a great job with his characters and the plot lines. His ability to combine the drama and the humor works well within the context of the story. I also like the fact that he seems to carry a sub story arc from book to book. The main plot line is there, but as you read each of the books in the series, you can see where he has underlying threads that will be explored in future novels.
Ex: His godmother, his parents and WHAT exactly DID happen between him and his mentor? This makes for interesting reading to me. Lets me get to know that character a little deeper, even as he is out being the reluctant hero in the current plot.
His assistant Bob is hilarious as a sidekick, and the relationship between Harry and Detective Karrin Murphy is..tentative. She's a highly trained professional who has to deal with things that are not supposed to be real...and he's one of them.
I would recommend this novel and the ones that follow after, to anyone who enjoys a story with a reluctant hero, humorous sidekicks, and even that leetle hint of romance. The continuous story arcs are also a plus.
As I once heard someone say, "Harry Potter..all grown up!"

Book Review: Wonderful Addition to the Horror/Fantasy Genre
Summary: 5 Stars

Storm Front is the first book in the Dresden Files. Series protagonist, Harry Dresden, is the typical anti-hero and he is also a practising wizard who makes his living as a detective. The setting is Chicago and Harry is trying to work practical magic in a world that has rejected the supernatural in favor of science and technology.

Storm Front is a well-written, suspenseful mystery and Harry Dresden is a dark, interesting character with a self-depreciating sense of humor and a strong personal code of honor. Harry's code compels him to fight against the supernatural forces preying on his clients and his snarky attitude puts him at constantly dangerous odds with both the bad guys and the authorities.

What starts out as a routine murder investigation turns into a major complication wrought with danger and black magic when Harry crosses paths with the Chicago mob and a mysterious figure known as the Shadowman. During his investigation, Harry encounters all manner of supernatural beings as demons, faeries, and vampires.

Jim Butcher creation is an original and compelling mystery that wraps the reader up in Harry's dilemma. Storm Front is a very good first book and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Book Review: Excellent Combination of Mystery and Fantasy...
Summary: 5 Stars

With the popularity of the TV series, tons of people are bound to try this new series, the Dresden Files. I was one of them. I haven't seen the show, but my two favorite genres are fantasy and mystery, so how could I go wrong with a book that combines both? I was definitely not disappointed. In "Storm Front" Jim Butcher mingles the two genres and comes out with a wonderful book.

Harry Dresden is a wizard P.I. and a bad one at that. He can barely make ends meat or pay the bills because everyone thinks his yellow page wizard ad is a joke. But that all changes when a double homicide occurs in the city of Chicago and black magic is the murder weapon. Harry is called to the scene and thus begins his roller coaster ride dealing with mob bosses, the Chicago P.D., his warden and the White Council, demons, scorpions, a black mage, and many, many more. We meet several characters that make the novel a joy to read, but none better than Harry who can't catch a break.

Butcher is a fantastic writer, weaving magic in the real world. His crisp writing and flow throughout the book make this an extremely fun and enjoyable read. I can't wait to start the next in the series "Fool Moon." Everyone enjoy!

Book Review: Another wizard named Harry
Summary: 5 Stars

I must confess that my affection for the short-lived TV series was what roused my curiosity and got me reading this book. I don't do detective novels, but this time I made an exception. The Harry Dresden series as a whole is one long, continuous story, a sort of combination of Sam Spade, Kolchak the Nightstalker, Harry Potter, and manages to throw in almost every element of the fantasy genre that their author could conjure up.

This first book in the series, "Storm Front", is the only one adapted for TV. The book is, of course, a lot longer and more complex, much more intense, the characters are drawn out in greater depth, and also, a great deal funnier. As in most of the Harry Dresden adventures, our hero is confronted with a supernatural menace that nearly brings about his destruction, only to foil his enemy at the very last moment. Along the way, he meets the love of his life, Susan, is forced into aquaintence with a mob leader, deals with a supernatural enemy, and of course has a wonderfully exciting, comical battle with giant scorpions and a demonic toad, all on a disastrous first date.

Harry is not only a guy you can believe in and feel for, but a true superhero.

Book Review: Loved This Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I am thrilled to have discovered The Dresden Files series thanks to all of you Amazon reviewers. I frequently read Amazon reviews about books to see if I might be interested in a new author and that's just how I happened to discover Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books. I noticed how many 4 1/2 and 5-star ratings his books consistently got and I thought "Well, they've got to be good with ratings like these and so many enthusiastic reviews" so, I bought Storm Front and I was not disappointed at all! Jim Butcher has a great imagination as an author and knows how to write a good book. I know it's a good book when I think about it alot while I'm not reading it and can't wait until I have time to pick it up and read more. In other words, it's hard to put down. I also found it easy to visualize certain scenes in the book which made what was going on that much more exciting and suspenseful. While these books are not "high literature" they are darn good entertainment and well-written. I was surprised, actually, at how much I enjoyed this book and I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Fool Moon.

Thanks everyone for turning me on to the Dresden Files!
