Book Review: Sometimes Loving then Killing the Aliens.

Not everybody knows about Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen (or at a longer title "Stephen Colbert presents, Stephen Colbert's Alpha Squad 7: Lady Nocturne: a Tek Jansen Adventure) but at last more people can at least become familiar with it! While the graphic novel wasn't written by Colbert himself, although he did have the entitled Galactic Overlording, the writers, John Layman, Tom Peyer and Jim Massey did an excellent job in capturing the Tek Jansen character, i.e. a sex crazed, fighting for the good of space without to much thought into his actions, space hero. The characters added into the Tek Jansen saga are hilarious, I personally love Meangarr, and what's more you actually grow a strange attachment to them, even though they are not in the comic nearly as much as Tek, which in my opinion, is always a great feat to have readers grow attached to anyone, much less the side characters. The stories are great, witty, and don't drag on, although I found the second half (the short stories) to be my favorite, because they are shaped more like the Tek Jansen cartoons.
My favorite thing about this novel however is the art, there are a few artist featured in the Tek Jansen adventures, and the book includes great poster art in between segments, but my favorite for capturing Tek Jansen I think is Robbi Rodriguez, who's style is a great mix of the cartoony look that Tek Jansen should be and the detailed look that readers want in a graphic novel. Not to mention panel compositions are great, my favorite example of this is on page 31. And a huge tip of the hat to the colorist as well, they did an amazing job!
All in all Tek Jansen is a great collection, not just for fans (although I'm sure they were the first to hit the stores for it) but for comic enthusiast as well, it's got everything, violence, hot ladies (and one very lovely Alpha Squad member), and best of all humor!
