Book Reviews of Starting Strength (2nd edition)Book Review: Get this book. It will change how you train. Summary: 5 Stars
Get this book. It is that simple. This book includes all of the information you need to know about CORRECT, SAFE form on the squat, deadlift, power clean, overhead press and bench press. It also delves into nutrition, assistance exercises, and Rippetoe's 3x5 novice program. Don't want to hear about technique on theses "hard" lifts? This book is not for you. These are the lifts that Rippetoe says should be the central focus of any training program, and failing to perform them is hurting potential progress. If you are looking for technique on exercises like shoulder raises, or tricep extensions you are not going to like this book. Isolation exercises are very highly discoruaged by Rippetoe, and for good reason. If you follow his advice and begin the novice program, you will see that he is right.
This book will change your outlook on training.
Book Review: Essential Strength Training Summary: 5 Stars
This book, coupled with Bill Starr's 5x5 program (available freely on the Internet) has really changed my lifting for the better in ways that I'd have a hard time describing. Starting Strength lays out the compounds lifts that create strength: the squat, the deadlift, the power clean, the press (standing and bench), and accessory lifts (barbell rows, pullups, even bicep curls).
When you see a book that has ~80 pages on the squat, you know you're dealing with serious business. This is a far cry from the fad workout garbage. This book shows the ways to make a human body strong, powerful, and shaped properly using proper form and technique.
I would recommend this book for anyone that walks into a weight room. I wish someone would have handed me Starting Strength when I first got started lifting. Seriously, buy this book and get strong.
Book Review: Essential reading for all beginners Summary: 5 Stars
The sheer attention this book has attracted since is 1st Edition release says it all.
One of the first things I learned in my education in the fitness industry is that there is no 'one-for-all' programme out there with regard to strength, endurance, size, cardiovascular activity etc...
This book is the closest thing that comes to such a programme. The combined 60+ years experiance from Coach Rippetoe and Dr. Kilgore which also combines scientific and practical knowledge ensures that this tried and tested book stans out as the absolute best there is for people looking to start to lift weights in order to get bigger and/or stronger...
Highly recommended. A constant reference point for me. If I had known about this book earlier and had the good sense to buy it I would have saved myself lots of trouble
Book Review: perfect introduction to the weight-room for a beginner Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to owning this book, all I would use in the gym were machines. Starting Strength has equipped me with the necessary information to start doing real weight-lifting correctly and safely. The book is an excellent introduction for anyone that wants to start weight-lifting but has no experience. Covering the core lifts: squat, deadlift, bench press, (overhead) press and the power clean, the discussion explains the lifts, the correct biomechanics and common faults. Also includes a section on programming (i.e. creating a program suitable for a beginner lifter). This book is an extensive completely self-contained introduction to the weightroom.
After reading the book, and starting my own strength-training, I can't help but feel that weightlifting (as prescribed in this book) belongs in everyones fitness regime.
Book Review: Essential! Very funny too. Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent book.Completely changed the way i look at building muscle.
Before i would spend 1hr-2hrs 4 days a week in the gym doing split routines.Working out every tiny muscle group for 10x times infinity with no rhyme or reason to it.Now it's down to the true essentials because that is what works. The beauty of this book is it's simplicity.
Also one thing i never knew before buying this book is how much FUN moving weights with barbells are.So much more satisfying than a lot of the exercises i did in the past.
If you've got to this page while searching for similiar books.Stop right now and buy this.Seriously!
You'll build more muscle than before, save money on gym equipment, save time(my workouts are far shorter than before) and have a lot of laughs reading Mark Rippetoe's informative and very funny prose.
