Book Reviews of Starting Strength (2nd edition)Book Review: The Best Summary: 5 Stars
Reading Starting Strength is the best weight training instruction I've ever had. The best features are that the basic program is simple, really works (there are so many recommendations out there, it confused me for a long time), and the book has an entire chapter for each lift, with complete details including correct posture, grip, breathing, and common errors. The only things left out (which may have been fixed in the new edition, I have the first) are a few details that relative newbies like me don't know, like exactly how much cardio warmup to do.
But the real reason I love this book is my personal experience with it. I've done some weight training before, but not for some years, and I slowly took it up again last year. I found this book and started using it for real at the beginning of 2008. I started gaining strength a lot faster than I had been, and now I'm stronger than I've ever been before and still adding weight every workout.
Book Review: Should be MANDATORY for all lifters. Summary: 5 Stars
I've been lifting for many years. I had to take some "humble pills" after I read the book. Just when I thought I knew what I was doing, I realized I was a big dweeb.
This is by far the best book on how to safely and correctly lift weights. You can follow the best bodybuilding or powerlifting program, but the best regimen is not going to do you any good if you injure yourself because of improper lifting.
I wish I had access to this book when I first started bodybuilding years ago.
New guys, please do yourselves a favor and put this book in your library. If you want to progress you would want to do so by optimizing your body's neuro-muscular activation while preventing injuries.
Experienced guys, please do yourselves a favor as well and keep an open mind and realize that there is a possiblity that how your lift weights may actually injure you down the road.
Book Review: Fantastic manual Summary: 5 Stars
This training manual is absolute gold dust, the stuff I've picked up from it in just 3 months has taught other people I know - who have been lifting for years - a thing or two. Incredibly detailed instructions on the main lifts with loads of photo's and diagrams (56 pages on the Squat alone), yet not in the least bit dry or boring. Plus lot's of detailed instructions on a wide range of assistance exercises. Coupled with the recent DVD Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training , and their other book Practical Programming for Strength Training you'll have a set of references which you return to time and time again. Why both books and the DVD are not available in the UK I'll never know? Amazon.co.uk put this on your stock list!!!
Book Review: This book is the real deal! Summary: 5 Stars
A little about me. I'm in my 20s but do not have a sports or athletic background. Because of my the way my life is right now, I probably spend too much time sedentary. I have been meaning to change that, but don't have the money for expensive gyms or training. Still, not knowing anything about proper form, I probably would just hurt myself at the gym, and already have sustained minor injuries at home.
This book turns all of that around. I have not finished the book yet, but I have read enough to realize that this book is the real deal. I already can feel the difference just by following the technique and form in this book. Once I've got that down, I am sure I will have no problems at the gym, and from what I hear, will probably know more about what I'm doing than most. This book really is for anyone. It may seem wordy, but it's worth it. You are going to be able to change your life, and do it properly.
Book Review: Probably the best book ever written on strength training!! Summary: 5 Stars
My tag line says it all really, But if you wish for further reasons to buy this book then look No further:
Covers the basic compound lifts (Squat, Bench, Deadlift & Press) and also the Power Clean, In more detail than any other referenceable source. I'm by no means a power lifter and train recreationally and for performance gains in my MMA training... However even though I've been lifting for around 3 years now, reading this book has reminded me and also added some things to look for when performing the lifts to help form (OBVIOUSLY THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!!).
Its also a very good program, Nothing will get a beginner stronger in a faster time than this!! (Squatting 3 Days a week!!!)
But I'd also recommend the book to others who may be advanced lifters, If for nothing more than the incredible detail it goes into when discussing the 5 lifts!!
A MUST OWN FOR ANY STRENGTH TRAINING ENTHUSIAST!!
