Book Reviews of Stargirl (Readers Circle)Book Review: "Stargirl" is a MUST READ..... Summary: 5 Stars
I had never read anything written by Jerry Spinelli until i began working at a school. But this book was AMAZING! The way Spinelli writes is so captivating, you have a hard time putting it down. Its just SO moving.....the way Stargirl is so different from anyone else is a great lesson for young readers. BE YOURSELF. If everybody conformed how boring would life be? It brings back high school moments, about first loves, about being accepted....and about letting go without moving on. Needless to say, the ending made me cry. Yes, it's that good. You'll never know unless you give it a read for yourself.
Book Review: Strangely, I liked it! Summary: 5 Stars
Although I don't normally like books set in the present time period (I'm more into medieval fantasy), this was one book that I really enjoyed. The book is set in a typical high school community, with all of the common prejudices and cruelty seen in high schools. This book differs, however, and shows the reader the value of kindness and individualism. Stargirl is a book that could change your life if you just give it that chance. I am going to buy this book when I next get the opportunity, so I can enjoy it's meaningful message over and over.
Book Review: Lots for Discussion Summary: 5 Stars
Jerry Spinelli touches on high school issues: individualism vs confomity, popularity, the positives and negatives of teams, being supportive and being intrusive.
In reading about Stargirl and Leo, teens can see a model of group psychology. They can discuss it, relate it to their own lives and schools.
This is a good book for any teen reading club, literature class or general discussion group. It's good for parents as well, because it can help them relate to the social pressures their teens face every day.
Book Review: Is There Anything Else Kids Really Need to Learn? Summary: 5 Stars
I'm mostly weighing in with stars in order to counter the 1 star folks, who appear to have completely missed the point. Others have covered the book well already. It is a great young adult book. If kids could just clue in to being brave enough to live their lives without being scared of what their peers say, and to live those lives in ways that bless others, the world would be so much better. That's what Stargirl is about. Maybe as a suggestion, this book will prompt a few people in that direction. Regardless, it's good to read.
Book Review: Stargirl Shines Summary: 5 Stars
I bought stargirl as a gift for my 12 year old daughter. I read the whole thing in one day! I feel this is a great book about learning to love your self for what you are and not letting other people change you! In school it is easy to get caught up in everyone else, and this book shows that it's ok to be different, it's ok to be yourself. Even if it doesn't please anyone else! I feel it had great values! My daughter is liking it too!!!
Update...... My daughter loved the book too! She hates to read!
