Book Reviews of Stardust

Book Review: Great addition to the fantasy collection
Summary: 4 Stars

When I found out the movie Stardust was based off a novel, I couldn't help myself but go out and buy it.

Coming from a die hard fan of books like The Neverending Story, Harry Potter and Eragon, it's hard for me to have high expectations for any book to be better than those.

Stardust started off a bit boring to me. It did not catch my attention right away and I had to force myself through the first couple of chapters to really get sucked in. But the fact of the matter is I definetly did! It defently is a light read, but at the same time one has to really pay attention to the details, because in a J.K Rowling-esque style, all the sub-plots and little details all come to play in the end.

I found this book to be very charming. It reminded me very much of The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, except for much shorter and somewhat of a cheesy love story. I would have loved for the book to be longer and have more plot line. By the time I got really into the book, three fourths of it was finished. Maybe I'm too used to very lengthy books, however.

I would recommend this book to anyone with a love of other world type fantasy novels. It was well worth the time I spent procrastinating to do homework :)

Book Review: Stardust is magical
Summary: 4 Stars

I've just finished reading Stardust by Neil Gaiman (writer of MirrorMask) and it's really a good book. I think it would appeal to any Labyrinth fan. I love it but I don't care for the epilogue. I know a lot of people like to compare it to The Princess Bride but I think it's actually closer to The Last Unicorn.

The main character, Tristran, is the son of a mortal and a faerie slave kept by a witch in the realm of faerie. The story begins in a town near a wall that seperates the magical world from the human world. When there is a falling star Tristran promises to retrieve it for a girl he is infatuated with. He is unaware that the star has taken the form of a girl in the faery world and that there are others after her too. Three elderly witches who want to use her heart to become young again, and some bickering princes.

It's a really good story and it has a relatively happy ending except for the epilogue with of course talks about the death of a mortal character after years of marriage to an immortal one. I hope the film adaptation doesn't have the epilogue. Fantasy stories are all too bitter sweet lately.

Summary: 4 Stars

Tristran Thorn would do absolutely anything to win pretty Victoria Forrester's heart. Even venture across The Wall into mysterious Faerie in search of a fallen star.

But once he enters Faerie, strange things begin to happen.

Tristran knows the location of every place in the land. He meets a strange, small man who gives him a candle that allows him to travel great distances. And when he finally finds the fallen star, Tristran discovers that it is not a lump of rock like he thought, but a young woman, who has quite the mind of her own.

Tristran, though, isn't the only one looking for the star. The witch queen and a group of three brothers all want something of it. For these brothers, it's the power she possesses. For the witch, it's her heart.

STARDUST was completely entrancing, charming, and a surprisingly quick read. The star's spunk and Tristran's humanity are both to be admired in this adventurous tale that will make you laugh out loud and break into tears. This is one book not to be missed.

Book Review: on audio
Summary: 4 Stars

Stardust is a charming novel and beautifully written. The language is simple, concise, and to-the-point (I appreciate not having to re-read convoluted sentences). If you're looking for a deep, dark epic that's heavy on description, characterization, political intrigue, and plot twists, this isn't it. This is a light break from the heavy stuff. It's fun and entertaining. The plot is quick and has a bit of the Princess Bride feel in that it's purposely a bit silly in places.

I listened to Stardust in audiobook format, which I highly recommend because Neil Gaiman himself is the reader, and he does an excellent job. His voice is smooth and pleasant and there are none of those little problems where the reader stresses the wrong word or uses the wrong tone because (s)he didn't realize exactly what the author was trying to get across. I really enjoyed hearing the author read his own book, and there was an interesting interview with Mr Gaiman after the story.

A fun and easy read, especially for Princess Bride fans. Try the audiobook!! --FanLit.net

Book Review: Let the magic begins...
Summary: 4 Stars

Neil Gaiman is by far one the top fantasy writers of our time. Personally I like when he writes with that dark humor of his. (just like he did on -American Gods, Neverwhere & Anansi Boys). Stardust on the other hand it's the "nice" book of the pack.

Nevertheless, it's a beautiful piece of work. You will be transported to the town of Wall and beyond the market.. to an extremely well crafted land of magic, witches and kings. Stardust it's quite entertaining and will keep you turning page after page. Great book for both young and adults.
