Book Reviews of Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: AbyssBook Review: I want to give this 4.5 stars... Summary: 5 Stars
...but Amazon won't let me, and I'd rather give it 5 than only 4. The only reason I don't want to give it 5: that implies perfection, and this book was not perfect. But it was about as close to perfect as any Del-Rey Star Wars novel since Traitor...which may or may not be saying much, depending on your point of view.
I like the more philosophical take on Star Wars that we get from authors like Matthew Stover, and Denning did a lot of that in this book, albeit in a much more subtle way, which may very well be better for Star Wars. While I like Stover's writing style, his narrative voice is so strong that it often overpowers the personality of the characters. Denning's voice, on the other hand, is practically invisible. But the more Denning writes Star Wars, the more you can see going on behind the scenes: the best example of that in Abyss, I think, is everything having to do with the "Throne of Balance." This is a concept which ties together not only a bunch of underlying themes from the Legacy of the Force series, but also ties both series' back to the original concept of "bringing balance to the force." It raises a whole host of philosophical questions, yet nowhere in the novel does Denning even mention this. He simply weaves the idea into the story and leaves the reader to ponder the implications. Personally, I really like this technique.
Some other things I appreciated about Abyss (minor spoilers)
-Raynar Thul! Not only is it great to see the authors haven't completely forgotten about him, but he gets to participate in the story, and Denning's portrayal of him is a delicious blend of sympathy and creepiness.
-The Sith Tribe: absolutely wonderful to see a pre-Bane Sith order roaming the galaxy in all their ambitious, scheming, back-stabbing glory. As soon as they were introduced in Omen, I was excited to see the inevitable clash between their elevated opinions of themselves versus the way the galaxy has changed in the last 5 millenia, and Denning did not disappoint. 2 Jedi versus 15 Sith!
-The situation on Coruscant: people have complained that it is not moving quickly enough, but it's definitely more interesting and complex than the Civil War from LotF. The characters are sufficiently complex that we can't assign cardboard villain-status to anyone, even Daala. The plot feels fluid and malleable, like it could end up going anywhere, unlike the LotF plot which often felt like it was on rails.
-Kyle Katarn spoke. Enough said.
Summary of Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: AbyssFollowing a trail of clues across the galaxy, Luke Skywalker continues his quest to find the reasons behind Jacen Solo?s dark downfall and to win redemption for the Jedi Order. Sojourning among the mysterious Aing-Tii monks has left Luke and his son Ben with no real answers, only the suspicion that the revelations they seek lie in the forbidden reaches of the distant Maw Cluster. There, hidden from the galaxy in a labyrinth of black holes, dwell the Mind Walkers: those whose power to transcend their bodies and be one with the Force is as seductive and intoxicating as it is potentially fatal. But it may be Luke?s only path to the truth.
Meanwhile, on Coruscant, the war of wills between Galactic Alliance Chief of State Natasi Daala and the Jedi Order is escalating. Outraged over the carbonite freezing of young Jedi Knights Valin and Jysella Horn after their inexplicable mental breakdowns, the Jedi are determined to defy Daala?s martial tactics, override Council Master Kenth Hamner?s wavering leadership, and deal on their own terms with the epidemic of madness preying on their ranks. As Han and Leia Solo, along with their daughter Jaina, join the fight to protect more stricken Knights from arrest, Jedi healers race to find a cure for the rapidly spreading affliction. But none of them realize the blaster barrel is already swinging in their direction?and Chief Daala is about to pull the trigger.
Nor do Luke and Ben, deep in the Maw Cluster and pushing their Force abilities beyond known limits, realize how close they are?to the Sith strike squad bent on exterminating the Skywalkers, to a nexus of dark-side energy unprecedented in its power and its hunger, and to an explosive confrontation between opposing wielders of the Force from which only one Master?good or evil?can emerge alive.
