I'm normally leery of original character romances, but this book was a treat. The main story and characterizations are strong, and I was impressed that Dillard pulls off relationships for each of the Big Three without resorting to stereotypes or mush. And the romance isn't overwhelming, it's just a nice, realistically handled supplement to a great pre-movie story.
(FYI, #3 favorite for McCoy fans, after Planet of Judgement and Covenant of the Crown.)
