Book Reviews of Star Trek Movie Tie-InBook Review: Recommended with .....Reservations Summary: 4 Stars
I saw the movie with a great deal of wariness as one who adored the original series, every iteration of the series EXCEPT Enterprise, and enjoyed only a few of the movies. Upon exiting the theatre, I was enthralled! The movie was well acted, the special effects were thrilling, and well, while the plot was a bit weak in spots, I could overlook them. My reaction to Alan Dean Foster's book invoked the same reaction. Overall, the book was very faithful to the movie script, and some the "back story" Foster created really enhanced the reader's experience. There was one glaring omission in my estimation SPOILER SPOILER --no backstory on the genesis of Spock/Uhura's relationship. (Yeah, that was a very pleasant and pleasurable surprise in the movie). Overall, it is a recommended buy if you're a fan of the movie.
Book Review: A good read Summary: 4 Stars
I liked the movie, thought it was fun, but with any fast-paced movie you can miss a lot of little things. Descriptions, dialog that flies by...
This was a nice way to go back through the movie and fill in some things that seemed a bit missing in the movie, or that just went by too fast. One question I had, for example, is does this James T. Kirk have an older brother, like he did in the series? Question answered in the book, with scenes the movie just didn't have time to show.
It was nice to be able to slow it down and get more behind the scenes views of the characters. I would have like a bit more delving into certain things, as some things I felt were left deliberately vague in the movie were the same in the book. But overall an enjoyable read.
Book Review: As good as the movie, though I think the movie is better! Summary: 4 Stars
I saw the movie opening day and picked up this book shortly afterwards. Typically, I find novelizations of movies a lot more detailed than the actual movie and get better insight into the characters through the written word rather than visually seeing it. I'm a fan of Alan Dean Foster and I was a bit surprised that there was wasn't a lot more detail about the plot or characters than what was portraited up on screen. The book is good and clears up a few things (like what happened to Admiral Archer's <note another tie in> beagle) but I was hoping for a bit more, which is why I could only give it 4 out of 5 stars.
Book Review: Worth the read if you want to fill in some minor holes... Summary: 4 Stars
Obviously this book is a "Tie-In", and when read you can pretty much take the context from the movie right into the book word for word. The book goes into depth about a few minor things but nothing really necessary.
The book was worth the read if you just like sci-fi in general or love Star Trek. I do recommend the book but like I said, it is a Tie-In, you saw a great movie and your going to get the same thing within the book.
4/5
Book Review: Essentially this is EXACTLY the same as the movie with a small # of differences Summary: 3 Stars
Let me say up front: with very few exceptions, a book will be better than the movie version 99.999% of the time...however, in this case, if you've seen the movie, you really don't need to read the book. Honestly. A tough assessment, I realize, but pretty much the truth. There are a few (VERY few) places where the author, the veteran Alan Dean Foster, was given some almost microscopic creative license, but did that add enough to the story to make the purchase worthwhile? Hardly.
Harsh news, I know--especially when talking about the author who wrote the very FIRST Star Wars novel OUTISIDE of the films (Splinter of the Mind's Eye). I've read my fair share of ADF books, and while Star Trek is very capable and even well written, all it succeeds in doing is placing the film, scene-by-scene into novel form--that's all.
Now...with that said, if you haven't seen the movie (yet), and really LOVE to read instead of see films, I believe you will find Star Trek to be plenty worth your time. The ONE thing the novel does that the film fails to do as well is explain well enough the differences between THIS Star Trek and the well-established television series, movies and books and WHY they are so different. Make that one for the author...otherwise having actually seen the movie, I would much rather take the time to see the fantastic movie again rather than read exactly what I've already seen in great detail.
The ONE place where I simply had to go, HUH??? Was the out-of-left-field relationship between Uhura and Spock...While I could care less whether or not Uhura has a relationship with pretty much anyone in the storyline, I just didn't feel that it made ANY sense whatsoever. Seriously, Uhura and Chekhov would have made more sense, but that may be just MY opinion here, who knows? Am I really alone here?
To sum it up: Star Trek the movie: 5 Stars...Star Trek the book: 3 Stars.
'Nuff said.
