Book Reviews of Splinter of the Mind's Eye (Star Wars)Book Review: Seriously underrated... Summary: 5 Stars
Splinter of the Mind's Eye is a fascinating novel that was written during a time when the Star Wars legacy had not blossomed into the commercial titan it is today. The idea was, write a novel that could be adapted into a low budget sequel if the original Star Wars movie didn't take off. I won't jump into the plot lines because that has been addressed by several Amazon reviewers already. My interest lies soley in the novelty and the nostalgia that is Star Wars of 1977. The world was addicted to this galaxy far, far away. We couldn't get enough of Tatooine, Yavin IV or the Death Star. Everyone wanted to ride a landspeeder across the Dune Sea or pilot an X-Wing Fighter through deep space and the idea of bull's eyeing Womprats with a T-16 was more fun than a Space Invaders torney. What would happen next in the Star Wars universe filled my imagination day after day when I was a child. But how often could Luke return to the cantina in Mos Eisley? With Obi Wan Kenobi dead Luke's jedi training was over and incomplete. What was to become of Darth Vader as he flew his damaged Tie fighter through deep space without an Imperial port to dock with. There was no Coruscant so for all we knew the Death Star was the Imperial Center. There was no mentioning of an all powerful emperor and the only reference to the sith that I remember was in a Star Wars picture storybook that labeled a picture of Darth Vader as the Dark Lord of the Sith. Han Solo had to return to Jabba to pay off his debt and we had no idea what Jabba even looked like or if Han would return in the sequel. Would Luke finally score with Leia? There wasn't a hint of the idea that they were siblings back in 1977. So it was a natural fantasy that the main hero of the first movie would score with the heroine. The original Star Wars movie could have been the end of the story just as it was a cliff hanger with so many unanswered questions.
Splinter of the Mind's Eye has received a bad rap and unjustly so. Most people are grading it on it's lack of continuity with the rest of the modern Star Wars canon. It is easily forgotten that SOTME is offically part of Star Wars canon. Yes there are several paradoxical events that occur such as Leia not feeling anything when she touches the Kaiburr shard, Luke's disappointment that he can't seem to get a romantic reaction from Leia or the dramatic lightsaber battle between Luke, Leia & Darth Vader over the Kaiburr crystal it's not impossible to "answer" all of the questions left behind by this novel. I can remember reading several comic books that had absolutely no bearing on the Star Wars timeline as it exists today. Darth Vader was an enigma. He was quite possibly the most evil villan ever created. No one had ever seen anyone or anything with the dark screen presence like Vader before. This novel amplifies this image of Vader quite well. He gets his arm sliced off and is pushed into a deep dark abyss bringing back the question what happened to him this time?
Summary of Splinter of the Mind's Eye (Star Wars)Luke Skywalker expected trouble when he volunteered to follow Princess Leia on her mission to the planet Circarpous. But he discovered that hidden on the planet was the Kaiburr crystal, a mysterious gem that would give the one who possessed it such powers over the Force that he would be all but invincible. In the wrong hands, the crystal could be deadly. So Luke had to find this treasure and find it fast....
