To open Tony Stromberg's first book will be to open the portal to a dream that will take root in your soul.
In this dream, your spirit is moving effortlessly across grass-kissed hills, speeding across plains at light speed, releasing pungent scent as you joyfully leap sweet-smelling brush, and stopping suddenly with dust rising around you to gaze into the last moments of sunset. You are powerful, you are free, you are flying. You are illuminated--every moment and movement is blessed by light. In this dream, you are a horse.
In this way, one after another the photographs of this book glide like a shallow stream over smooth rocks, pulling the reader with them from page to page. The blended effect of the themes of free horse, nature and light is of flow (Tony specializes in photographing wild mustangs and range horses; horses in their free state). Windblown manes tangle in black and white, powerful bodies pull themselves forward in gilded color. "Horses exemplify something to me that everyone longs for on some deeper, archetypal level," Tony (a horse owner himself and, accompanied by his wife Claudia, manages a ranch in New Mexico) explains in the introduction to his book. "After years of very precise and tightly directed advertising photography, I found a layer deep inside myself that literally craved something wild, something unrestrained, something raw and without boundaries-something out of control."
"When the seed for this book slowly began to germinate, I had grandiose plans. I felt I had a lot to share about our world's precarious lack of balance. But I soon realized I didn't have to say anything at all, at least not in writing.
