So many Spanish grammar books out there just wet your appetite but do not really satisfy you truly. Spanish Grammar for Independent Learners is not one of them. A rare gem among all the other reference tools, I salute to the usefulness of the conjugation charts which present about 34 fully conjugated verbs.
The content about Spanish grammar and sentence structure is rich and comprehensive but very easy to understand so that you can learn how to use them properly in practical conversations.
All the vital aspects of language are explained in depth - nouns, adjectives, prepositions, and other essentials. Even the preterite and imperfect tenses are given so much importance so you can overcome the difficulties in using them in different situations.
The authors have explained explicitly how learners can benefit from this book, clarifying how to use the lessons in becoming more self-reliant in understanding the complexities of the Spanish grammatical system. For example, it gives a step-by-step guide on which page of the book you should consult when you are not sure of your answer for the test after the lesson.
It has a unique and amazing layout, presenting each concept in a broad and general manner, then a detailed follow-up after that. For example, the authors took the time to present all the elements of a noun phrase (the determiner, adjective, noun, and preposition) in such a way that you can appreciate its individuality and then combine it with the others. The authors even pointed out the pages on where you can find more explanations and examples about it. So much more to say but one thing is for sure - whether you are taking a Spanish class or studying on your own, you should get this book.
And besides Practice Makes Perfect Basic Spanish (Practice Makes Perfect Series) this is one of the few Spanish grammar books that does a great job of explaining when to use por vs. para. This is also area of this book where the author does a commendable job explaining the subjunctive tense vs. the indicative. This book has really helped me to understand the subjunctive vs. the indicative. And if you have been studying Spanish for any length of time, then you know that without a native Spanish speaking instructor, the subjunctive vs. the indicative can be a very difficult topic to understand.
For the most part, I am learning Spanish on my own and do not have access to a Spanish instructor, so the self-correction techniques in this book were of immense value to me. Whether you have access to a Spanish teacher or not, I am sure that you will find that this book of great value.
Here's my list of my favorite 6 products for learning Spanish that I think will help anyone who wants to learn or improve their Spanish. As you can see from many of my recommendations, I enjoy reading stories in Spanish because I believe reading stories really makes the language stick in your head.
1. Easy Spanish Reader w/CD-ROM: A Three-Part Text for Beginning Students (Easy Reader Series)
Make sure that you get the version of this book that comes with the additional CD which contains recordings of passages from the book so that you can download them to your Ipod or mp3 player and improve your ability to understand the language when you hear someone speak it.
2. Spanish Stories / Cuentos Españoles (A Dual-Language Book) (English and Spanish Edition) This is my second favorite Spanish reader.
3. Short Stories in Spanish: New Penguin Parallel Text (New Penguin Parallel Texts) (Spanish and English Edition) Another great book for anyone who likes to learn a language by reading.
4. First Spanish Reader: A Beginner's Dual-Language Book (Beginners' Guides) (English and Spanish Edition) A very popular book for learning the language by reading that I also enjoyed immensely.
5. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This fun and interactive software has been a tremendous help for me in allowing me to now master what was once the most hardest part of learning Spanish for me (learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs).
6. Spanish for Reading: A Self-Instructional Course This book has done wonders to help my Spanish reading comprehension.
