Book Reviews of Sophie Scholl and the White RoseBook Review: A time almost impossible to comprehend Summary: 5 Stars
In all my born days (and there are plenty!) I have read many many books. But never have I ever read anything like SOPHIE SCHOLL AND THE WHITE ROSE by Jud Newborn and Annette Dumbach. I picked it up this morning and haven't been able to put it down. It is a beautifully written book; I don't know how to say how beautifully written I find it. It ought to be translated into every language. These events were going on in my beloved city of Munich a mere 11 years before I arrived. Simply presented, without pathos or bathos, without adjectives--just simple story-telling about a time that is almost impossible to comprehend--in straightforward language while painting the most grotesque picture imaginable. (I noticed that Richard von Wiezsäker, the revered former president of Germany, wrote a beautiful introduction to the German edition.) When I got to chapters 18 and 19, it was almost impossible to finish despite the fact that I already knew the ending. I have shed a few tears in my lifetime over a few books, but never had the catharsis of such a deep emotional reaction to any story I have ever read. The tears that came with chapter 19. All I can say is "amazing" and thank you. Nancy Keil
Book Review: Dropping into Nazi Germany Summary: 5 Stars
An emotionally stirring true account of a beautiful young woman, Sophie Scholl, her brother and a small group of anti-Nazi Germans whose resistance (The White Rose) to the regime's atrocities serves as a timeless model for all concerned with evil. From the first page of the book you are transported onto the streets of Munich at the height of the Third Reich. Trying to figure out how to resist and weaken the Nazi regime is an extremely dangerous course of action for a university student with the Gestapo one step away. The book reads like a breath stopping fictional adventure novel until you remember all the characters were real and the story is real. After you read the last page, there is a guilt feeling that it is now the reader's job to keep Sophie alive.
Book Review: Inspiring Movie Summary: 5 Stars
This movie shows the story of a young woman that is faithful to her conscience by facing an evil system. I watched also the interview with her sister. When asked if Sophie is a hero, her sister replied that "No", instead she believed that people at that time were so coward to stand up against the Nazi system. I would recommend this movie in classrooms to educate students to stand by what they believe. An inspirational movie of a young woman that lived a saintly life.
Book Review: Please Please Me Summary: 5 Stars
When I received my package I was ecstatic. All was in order. The book itself was presentable and better than I imagined and the package it came in made the book safe from crazy handling at the post offices. Even coming all the way from Britain, I was much pleased with the purchase. Thanks!
