Book Reviews of Something Borrowed

Book Review: My favorite chick lit novel
Summary: 5 Stars

As a chick lit author, I am pretty critical of other authors and novels (even if just secretly). I also do not dole out high compliments easily just to pat a fellow author on the back. Having said this, I can honestly say this is my favorite chick lit novel to date. In fact, I humbly credit Something Borrowed with inspiring me to write, because I identified with Giffin's writing style.

Giffin engages from the get-go. Rachel is a likable, easily relatable main character who finds herself in a moral dilemma. She has slept with her best friend's groom-to-be. At first glance, this could easily push Rachel right out of the likable category, but wait, there's more. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Darcy is not nearly as good of a friend to Rachel as Rachel is to her. Still, does that make it okay? Giffin expertly crafts this story and leads the readers' emotions seemingly by a leash. How can you root for someone that betrayed her best friend, and how can you like the guy who cheated on his fiance? Well you will, and it's a credit to Giffin's prowess as a writer. This book virtually defines the concept of a page turner. You will find yourself saying, "just a little further," but you won't be able to stop. This story is like chocolate - smooth, sweet, and addictive.

If that's not enough to convince you to read this book, consider that it's being made into a movie. Then be sure to read it before the movie comes out because books are almost always better than the movie, although I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised with this one.

Book Review: Something Borrowed
Summary: 5 Stars

Rachel and Darcy have been best friends since elementary school. They have been friends all throughout their teen years, college, and now as adults living in New York City. Rachel is the epitome of the good girl - she works as an attorney (although she hates it), lives in a nice studio, dates occasionally, not an over-drinker or party girl yet is always living in Darcy's shadow. Darcy, on the other hand, has it all - she has the job of her dreams, has a hot fiancé, the perfect body, clothes and well... life. On Rachel's 30th birthday, Darcy throws her a big bash and all is running smoothly until a couple of drinks, some bar hopping and a yummy make-out session finds her in bed with Dex (yep, her BFF's fiancé).

I actually won this book through a giveaway on Goodreads.com and I absolutely loved it. I had my reservations when I read what the book was about as I'm not very thrilled at the thought of a best friend cheating with her friend's significant other but the story played out well. I found myself rooting for Rachel, since she is the character I can relate to, despite the fact that she is the one breaking THE rule. All in all, the outcome was one that left me feeling good.

I thought the characters were realistic, the writing was sophisticated, and I found the complications that ensue genuine. It's a fun, silly, girly book - although it does have some thought-provoking questions about love, friendships and relationships in general.

I plan on reading Something Blue soon - because although Darcy was not the most loveable of characters, I think she also has a story tell. This is a great beach read or something you might wanna open up when you don't want to think too much... mind candy.

Book Review: A wonderful surprise!
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first read the description of this book, I was put off; I could never like the story of a girl that steals her best friend's fiance. But then I saw that over 300 people had rated this book with 4.5 stars and I said to myself "How can all of them be wrong?". So I went on and bought it and boy, was that a smart move!!! This book is really great. I couldn't put it down and stayed out late just to finish it. And when I finished it I was angry at myself that I had not already ordered "Something blue" and I had to wait for a couple of weeks to get it. As unbelieving as it may seem, you DO come to care about Rachel and wish Dex will leave Darcy for her. The book is very very well written, something that is not very common for chick lit novels. Perhaps, it's because it's not as light as most chick lit books out there, but offers a wealth of deeper emotions (NO, depression is not one of them). Not in the overly funny style of Shopaholic series or Bridget Jone's diary, this books makes you bond much more with the heroine and feel for her rather than read for her.
What most of all surprised me, is that while reading about Darcy's and Rachel relationship, I began reevaluating one or two of my own that ended badly, only to come to the conclusion that I should not have been as surprised as I was when they ended thus. So, if nothing else, you can read this book as an insight to female friendships, even those who seem almost perfect.

MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Book Review: ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAV. BOOKS!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am engaged, and like to browse through any books that relate to the subject (a little strange, I know... but my friends do the same!) Anyway, I came across Something Borrowed, and although not a typically flowing love story, it was SO much better than I expected-- which was a lot based on previous reviews! I literally couldn't put it down! I finished it in 3 days, and one night stayed up so late reading this page-turner I slept through my alarm in the morning... and was late to work! (It was worth it!) I just purchased Emily Giffin's other 2 novels and cannot wait to read them! I would recommend this book to any woman-- engaged or not. Although I can't wait to marry my fiance, I felt myself living vicariously through the character of Rachel and her steamy love affair! Giffin is able to so acurately put into words things women feel and think, and make points we never would have thought of ourselves! I was never bored as her descriptions led me to form a clear picture of the characters and situations in my mind. AMAZING!!

Book Review: Difficult to put down...
Summary: 5 Stars

What a great read. Sitting in the NYC subways for three hours per day allows me to read many books. This book is about a 29 year old woman named Rachel who hails from Indiana and is a successful lawyer making six figures in NYC. Darcy is Rachel's childhood friend. Darcy is beautiful and works in PR, but is not the intellectual type and is known by many to have a mean streak. Rachel introduces Darcy to her friend Dex (who she went to NYU Law School with) and they develop a relationship with plans of getting married. Rachel ends up sleeping with Dex, but there is a big problem... he is engaged to Darcy... And Rachel is supposed to be the MAID OF HONOR! You will not want to put it down.
